“Gemini Extensions” is the familiar name for integrations that let Gemini use supported apps and services. Google’s current help pages call them Connected Apps. They can make Gemini more useful for particular tasks—especially workflows centered on Google services—but they do not establish that Gemini is smarter than ChatGPT overall.

What are Gemini Extensions?

Gemini Extensions, now called Connected Apps in Google’s help materials, connect Gemini to supported services so it can retrieve information or carry out certain supported actions. What Gemini can access and do depends on the app, the product surface you use, your account eligibility, and any administrator controls.

For example, with the Google Workspace app connected, Gemini can find or summarize information in Gmail, Docs, and Drive, and work with supported Tasks, Keep notes, and Calendar events. Google’s examples include finding a recent email, summarizing a document, saving a list to Keep, and adding an event to Calendar. These examples do not mean every operation in those apps is supported. Google’s personal-account Connected Apps help page lists current capabilities and limits.

Eligible work or school accounts may also have connected apps such as Chat and Classroom. Google also describes attaching a GitHub repository as a way to help Gemini understand code. Availability and supported actions differ by account and service; see Google’s work and school account documentation.

How do I connect Gmail to Gemini?

Gmail access is provided through Google’s Workspace connection, rather than a separate Gmail-only extension. For a personal Workspace connection, Google says to sign in to Gemini with the same Google account used for Workspace and keep Keep Activity turned on. Google’s current help page has the steps and account-specific requirements: Use and manage apps connected to Gemini.

For a work or school account, connection may depend on a qualifying Workspace edition, administrator enablement, and other account settings. Google says availability can vary by account type, Workspace edition, location, language, device, and Gemini app. If the connection is missing, check those requirements with your administrator rather than assuming the feature is available to every account.

Can Gemini search my Google Drive?

With the relevant Workspace connection, Gemini can find or summarize supported information in Drive, including documents. Access is not unlimited: Google lists unsupported operations, including managing Drive folders and accessing pictures and videos stored in Drive. The precise boundaries vary by app, so use Google’s current Connected Apps support page for the specific action you need.

Some actions are also unavailable in Gmail. Google gives creating or deleting Gmail drafts as examples of unsupported tasks through the connected app. A connection therefore should not be treated as full control of the underlying service.

Can Gemini use my YouTube history?

Google’s Personal Intelligence feature can, for eligible users and where available, connect Workspace, YouTube, Google Search services, and Google Photos. Search services include products such as Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. Whether Gemini can personalize an answer using information from a particular service depends on that service’s connection and the user’s eligibility. Google describes the feature and its controls at Personal Intelligence in Gemini.

There is a difference between asking Gemini about public information and giving it access to personal data. Gemini may use public information from a Google service for a relevant prompt without being connected to the user’s private information in that service. Personalization from an app requires its own connection and eligibility.

Gemini in Chrome has a separate Connected Apps subset. Google’s Chrome help page currently lists Workspace, Photos, YouTube, and Search services; it also describes use of public information from Google Search, Maps, YouTube, and Google Travel for relevant prompts. Chrome capabilities should not be assumed to apply to every Gemini app or surface. See Gemini in Chrome help.

What can Gemini Connected Apps not do, and how reliable are they?

Supported connections have task-specific limits; a connected app does not make every feature of that service available to Gemini. Check the current Google support page for the app and action you plan to use, especially before relying on it to change or manage information.

Google also cautions that connected-app answers can be wrong or stale. Its work and school help page says: “Gemini Apps can hallucinate responses or provide outdated information, like from an older email when there’s a more recent one.” Check important details against the original email, document, calendar entry, or other source. When Gemini attaches sources, use them to verify the answer rather than treating a citation as proof that the summary is complete.

How does connected-app data affect privacy?

Privacy terms depend on the provider, account type, and data involved. Google says connected-app data may be used to personalize experiences and improve Google services. It also says Gemini does not directly train generative AI models on specified private data, including Gmail inboxes, Drive, Contacts, and Calendar. That statement applies to the data and conditions Google specifies; it should not be expanded into a blanket claim covering all data or every account type. Review Google’s explanation and controls in its Personal Intelligence help page.

OpenAI also documents ChatGPT apps that connect external services, retrieve information, or perform supported actions. Available data and actions depend on the app, permissions, and workspace controls. OpenAI says app providers’ terms and privacy policies apply; it also says connector data from Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts is not used to train models by default. See OpenAI’s connector documentation for its account-specific terms.

Are Gemini Extensions better than ChatGPT connectors?

Neither integration system makes its underlying AI universally smarter. The practical advantage depends on what you need to connect and what you need the assistant to do. Google’s documentation describes Gemini’s app behavior; OpenAI’s describes ChatGPT apps and connectors. Neither establishes an apples-to-apples performance ranking between the models.

What to compare Question to ask
Workflow fit Do you need access to Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or another service supported in your account?
Supported actions Can the connection do the specific task—such as adding a calendar event—or only retrieve information?
Access and administration Is the feature available for your account, device, location, and plan, and does an administrator need to enable it?
Privacy controls What information is accessed, how may it be used, what approvals apply, and how can you disconnect the app?
Reliability Can you check the answer against its source, and is the workflow safe if information is incomplete or outdated?

If your day-to-day work depends on Google services that Gemini can access, its connections may reduce friction for those tasks. If the services or actions you need are better supported in your ChatGPT account, ChatGPT may fit better. Compare the actual app, permissions, supported action, and account controls—not the word “smarter.”

How do I disconnect apps from Gemini?

Use the Connected Apps or app-connection controls for the Gemini product you use; the available settings can differ between Gemini surfaces and account types. Google’s current Connected Apps instructions and Personal Intelligence controls explain how to review connections and manage eligible personal-data access. For a work or school account, administrator policies may also affect what you can change.
