“Apple text messages” usually means messages sent in Apple’s Messages app, but the app can use several services: iMessage, RCS, SMS, or MMS. Blue bubbles indicate iMessage; green bubbles indicate RCS, SMS, or MMS. The color alone does not identify which green-bubble service was used.
What does “Apple text message” mean?
Apple’s Messages app is the interface for conversations on iPhone, but it does not send every message through one system. Depending on the recipient, device settings, network, iOS version, and carrier support, a message may use Apple’s iMessage service or a carrier service. Apple describes iMessage as a secure messaging service available in Messages on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s iMessage guide explains the service.
What do blue and green message bubbles mean?
- Blue: The message was sent using iMessage.
- Green: The message was sent using RCS, SMS, or MMS. Green does not distinguish among those three services.

How iMessage, RCS, SMS, and MMS differ

RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 and a text-messaging plan with a carrier that supports RCS. Carrier and regional availability vary. Apple notes that activation can take a few hours. Check Apple’s current RCS requirements and service comparison for your location and carrier.

Why did a message that should be blue appear green?
A green bubble means that particular message went through RCS, SMS, or MMS instead of iMessage. Apple lists several possible reasons:
- The recipient is not using an Apple device.
- iMessage is turned off on your iPhone or the recipient’s device.
- iMessage is temporarily unavailable.
- Messages settings need attention after setting up a new device.
These are possibilities, not a diagnosis from bubble color alone. Apple’s green-message troubleshooting guide covers the causes and checks.

What to check if you expect iMessage
- Check iMessage on your iPhone. Open Settings and go to Apps > Messages; confirm iMessage is on. Labels and paths can vary by iOS version. Apple’s Messages setup guide gives current setup instructions.
- Confirm the recipient can use iMessage. The recipient must have an Apple device set up for iMessage, and iMessage must be enabled on that device.
- Allow for a temporary service or connection issue. Since iMessage uses Wi-Fi or cellular data, check that your connection is available and try again later if the service is temporarily unavailable.
- If you want RCS, check compatibility. You need iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan with an RCS-supporting carrier. Support varies by carrier and region, and activation may take a few hours.
Is a green text message an error?
No. Green means the message used a carrier service—RCS, SMS, or MMS—instead of iMessage. That can be expected when messaging someone without iMessage or when iMessage is off or unavailable. The bubble color does not by itself show whether a message failed.
