“Apple security chip” is an imprecise phrase. In Mac discussions, it often means the Apple T2 Security Chip, a separate chip in certain Intel-based Macs. Macs with Apple silicon instead integrate security functions, including a Secure Enclave, into the main Apple system-on-chip (SoC). The Secure Enclave is a subsystem—not another name for the T2.
What does “Apple security chip” mean?
Apple’s documentation does not use “Apple security chip” as one unambiguous name for a single component. If someone uses the phrase about a Mac, ask which hardware they mean: the T2 in certain Intel Macs, or security features integrated into an Apple-silicon Mac’s main SoC. Apple describes the T2 as a separate ARM-based SoC alongside the Intel processor. Apple’s T2 security certifications overview identifies computers that contain it.
What is the difference between the T2 and the Secure Enclave?
The T2 Security Chip is a chip; the Secure Enclave is an isolated security subsystem that can be integrated into a chip. Apple documents a Secure Enclave in both Macs with Apple silicon and Intel Macs with T2. It has its own Boot ROM and AES engine, and supports secure key generation and storage as well as biometric processing. Apple’s Secure Enclave overview describes the subsystem and its role.
| Mac architecture | Where security functions are integrated | What to call it |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Mac with T2 | A separate T2 SoC alongside the Intel CPU; the T2 contains an embedded Secure Enclave. | Apple T2 Security Chip |
| Mac with Apple silicon | In the main Apple SoC, including the Secure Enclave. | Apple-silicon security features or Secure Enclave—not a separate T2 chip |
What does the hardware do?
Supports secure startup
Apple describes Boot ROM as a hardware root of trust for secure boot. On a Mac with T2, the chain of trust for macOS secure boot begins with the T2. Startup policies and their effects depend on the Mac and its configuration; do not assume the available settings are identical across T2 and Apple-silicon Macs. For T2 models, Apple documents Full Security, Medium Security, and No Security in Startup Security Utility on a Mac with an Apple T2 Security Chip; Full Security is the default policy in that documentation.

Helps protect encryption keys
The Secure Enclave provides a foundation for generating and storing keys used for data-at-rest encryption. Apple says a dedicated AES engine handles inline encryption and decryption, with keying material delivered through a special channel that does not expose it to the application processor or the overall operating system. See Apple’s Hardware security overview.
Processes biometric data
Apple says the Secure Enclave processes biometric data for Optic ID, Face ID, and Touch ID, protecting and evaluating that data. The exact biometric feature available depends on the device.

Isolates sensitive operations
The Secure Enclave is designed to be isolated from the main processor so it can protect sensitive user data, including in circumstances where the application-processor kernel is compromised. That isolation is a security design goal, not a promise that a device is immune to every attack or compromise.

No. The T2 is found in certain Intel Macs, not every Mac or Apple device. Apple-silicon Macs incorporate security capabilities into their main SoC rather than using a separate T2. Apple also documents Secure Enclave functionality across recent iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch, and HomePod products. Because the phrase “Apple security chip” can refer to different hardware, name the device and component when precision matters.

Do security features vary by Apple chip generation?
Yes. Apple’s SoC security feature table varies by generation. For example, its January 28, 2026 documentation says Secure Page Table Monitor is supported on A15-or-later and M2-or-later SoCs, replacing Page Protection Layer on supported platforms. That feature detail should not be generalized to every Apple chip or Mac; consult Apple’s SoC security documentation for the specific generation.
