Apple should follow the book-style iPhone Duo with two foldables aimed at different jobs: a smaller clamshell for people who want a more pocketable phone, and a larger tablet-style model for people who need more room to work, read, or create. Those are recommendations, not announced Apple products; the company has not established plans or a release schedule for either.

What iPhone Duo establishes—and what it does not

Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 as its first foldable iPhone. The inward-folding, book-style device has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says the inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display, while the outer screen offers 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area. Those are Apple’s comparisons and specifications, not independent measurements. Apple’s announcement also describes matching aspect ratios, ProMotion, Always On, up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness, Touch ID in the side button, and a precision hinge.

Apple says iOS 27 adapts to the foldable design with Split View and continuity between the outer and inner displays. The Associated Press describes using two apps side by side or two windows from the same website. Apple has also announced support for Apple Pencil with USB-C later in 2026 for notes, sketches, and document markup on either display. Preorders are scheduled to begin October 16, 2026, with availability from October 23; these launch dates and the Pencil-support timing are time-sensitive and should be checked against Apple’s current information. Apple’s launch release is the source for those announced details.

This is a starting point for thinking about a lineup, not evidence that Apple intends to make more shapes. The smaller and larger devices proposed here are editorial recommendations.

Why a foldable lineup needs different jobs, not just different sizes

A foldable earns its extra complexity when opening it changes what a person can comfortably do. Duo already combines an outer screen for ordinary phone tasks with a larger inner canvas for multitasking and media. A smaller model should make carrying and handling easier; a larger one should make sustained work or creative tasks more comfortable. If two devices offer essentially the same experience at different dimensions, the choice becomes harder to justify—especially when a hinge and flexible display add engineering demands.

What a smaller clamshell could add

A clamshell folds across its middle, closing into a compact shape and opening to a more conventional phone-sized screen. Its case is strongest for people who prioritize pocketability and one-handed use when the device is closed, but still want a full-size phone when it is open. That is a distinct purpose from Duo’s book-style design, which opens into a substantially larger workspace.

Keep the closed phone useful

The outer display would need to handle common tasks without forcing the user to open the phone every few minutes. Notifications, quick replies, calls, navigation prompts, and basic controls are natural candidates. If routine actions work only after unfolding, a smaller closed footprint becomes less useful in practice. The design should also make one-handed interaction comfortable rather than treating the cover screen as a miniature version of the main one.

Set a clear trade-off

A compact clamshell cannot be judged on folded dimensions alone. Apple would need to balance the open-screen experience, cameras, battery capacity, thickness, and weight. TrendForce says foldable makers are working on thinner and lighter designs, less visible creases, and long-term reliability through coordinated development of ultra-thin glass, adhesives, OLED modules, and support structures. It also points to competing demands among thinness, camera capability, biometric components, and battery space. Those are industry-analysis observations, not independently tested findings about an Apple clamshell. TrendForce’s analysis discusses these design pressures.

What a larger tablet-style foldable could add

A larger foldable should serve people who want more sustained workspace than Duo offers: for example, for reading, sketching, document work, or keeping several tasks visible. Bigger dimensions alone do not guarantee a useful upgrade. The open screen needs software and apps that make effective use of its area, and the device must remain manageable enough to carry and use.

Make the inner display a real workspace

Split View and continuity are useful foundations, but a larger model would need apps that adapt well to the expanded canvas. Useful designs could give documents, timelines, or reference material more room, and make it practical to keep related tasks visible together. Apple has announced Apple Pencil with USB-C support for Duo later in 2026 for notes, sketches, and document markup; that announced use case points to a role a larger display could serve, but does not establish Pencil support for any unannounced device. Confirm current compatibility and availability with Apple before relying on it.

Do not let size overwhelm portability

A tablet-style foldable must balance screen area against weight, thickness, battery life, cameras, and hinge durability. A larger open display can make reading or document work more comfortable, but a bulky folded device may be a poor everyday phone. Apple would need to show that the extra workspace is useful often enough to justify carrying it, rather than simply making the largest device in the lineup.

Design tests any follow-on should pass

Whether Apple makes a clamshell, a larger book-style device, or neither, the same practical questions separate a worthwhile foldable from a size experiment:

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold - Unlocked Smartphone with Gemini Moonstone 256GB
  • Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
  • The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
  • The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]
  • Folded usability: Is the closed device genuinely easier to pocket or handle, and can people complete common tasks without opening it?
  • Open-screen utility: Does the display’s size and aspect ratio improve the work, media, or reading experience the device is meant to serve?
  • Durability: How does the hinge hold up over time, how noticeable is the crease, and how durable are the display layers?
  • Component trade-offs: Do camera capability, battery capacity, biometrics, thickness, and weight remain acceptable in the chosen form?
  • Software: Do iOS and apps adapt to the screen, preserve continuity between displays, and make multitasking straightforward?
  • Value: Does the form factor solve a distinct problem, and do accessories such as a stylus add meaningful utility?

TrendForce says Duo uses a 10-layer ultra-thin display stack and a nano-texture treatment intended to reduce reflections and make the crease less noticeable. Those are descriptions and aims reported by TrendForce, not proof of long-term durability or a crease-free display. Its analysis underscores why materials, adhesives, display modules, and support structures have to work together rather than being treated as separate fixes. TrendForce’s report provides that industry context.

What the market figures can—and cannot—tell Apple

Available figures point to interest and growth expectations, but they are not a single verified tally of 2026 sales. The timing and status of each estimate matter:

Figure Source and status What it means
About 5 million Duo shipments in 2026; 24.8% share of foldable-smartphone shipments TrendForce forecast published September 10, 2026 A forecast for Duo, not confirmed shipments. In the same report, TrendForce estimated 20.2 million total foldable shipments in 2026, up 0.5% year over year.
30% year-over-year growth in foldable-smartphone shipments in 2026 IDC forecast published December 9, 2025, before Duo launched A pre-launch category forecast that raised IDC’s earlier 6% growth forecast; it is not a post-launch result.
Less than 5% of the overall smartphone market CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood, as quoted by the Associated Press in 2026 Wood’s characterization of foldables as a niche, not an independently measured figure reported by AP.

These estimates suggest analysts saw room for category growth and a premium opportunity, while foldables remained a small part of the overall smartphone market. They do not establish whether a smaller or larger Apple model would succeed; that depends on the product’s usefulness, durability, and price. TrendForce, IDC, and the Associated Press provide the figures and attributions above.

Apple should expand only if each foldable earns its place

A smaller clamshell and a larger tablet-style foldable would make sense as complementary choices: one organized around compactness, the other around workspace. Duo demonstrates Apple’s announced approach to combining a conventional outer display with a larger inner screen, but the official launch information does not establish plans or a timetable for either proposed follow-on. The strongest case for expansion is not a wider product range by itself; it is a clear, durable benefit for people whose priorities differ.
