An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a specialized processor for supported AI calculations. In a Windows PC, it works alongside the CPU and GPU; it does not replace either, and Windows does not send every AI task to it. Whether an app uses the NPU depends on the feature, model, Windows version, drivers, and software support.

What does an NPU do?

An NPU accelerates certain neural-network computations, especially inference: running a model that has already been trained to produce a result, such as recognizing content or transforming an image. It is a hardware resource that software must explicitly support through compatible APIs and execution providers.

Microsoft characterizes the NPU in Windows ML as suited to “battery-efficient, sustained on-device inference, with the most powerful NPUs available on Copilot+ PCs.” That describes its intended role, not a guarantee that every app will run faster or use less battery on every PC.

How does an NPU differ from a CPU or GPU?

A useful analogy is that the CPU is the flexible coordinator, the GPU is a broad parallel-work engine, and the NPU is a specialist for certain AI calculations. It is only an analogy: individual apps can divide or route work differently. Microsoft’s Windows ML supports inference on all three processor types.

Processor Typical role in Windows AI workloads Practical limitation
CPU General-purpose computing and a broad fallback for inference. Not every model or workload is optimized for CPU execution.
GPU High-throughput parallel work, including image, video, and generative AI workloads. Whether an app uses it depends on runtime support and the device’s GPU capability.
NPU Battery-efficient, sustained on-device inference for supported AI models and APIs. Use requires compatible hardware, software, drivers, model formats, and API support.

These are typical strengths, not a universal performance ranking. No shared-workload benchmark in the cited Microsoft materials establishes that one processor is always faster than another.

What does TOPS mean, and what does it tell you?

TOPS means trillions of operations per second. Microsoft uses this capability figure in the Copilot+ PC NPU threshold: at least 40 TOPS. It is not a direct measure of how quickly every AI app will feel, and TOPS figures should not be compared across chips without checking which operations and numerical precision were counted.

What is a Copilot+ PC?

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows hardware class with a defined NPU capability and baseline system requirements. Microsoft’s overview specifies an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more, at least 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. The overview lists Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD platforms; the category is not limited to one processor vendor. These are product requirements, not independent performance-study results. Do I need a Copilot+ PC or NPU to use Windows AI features?

Not necessarily. Windows AI features have different hardware and software requirements. Microsoft’s API documentation describes supported APIs on Copilot+ PCs that run on the NPU, while some APIs can also use the GPU or CPU on non-Copilot+ devices. A feature’s availability and execution path depend on its API, Windows version, supported chip, driver, model, and runtime.

Therefore, neither the presence of an NPU nor the Copilot+ designation proves that a particular app or feature uses that NPU. Check the requirements for the specific feature or application. Microsoft’s Windows AI FAQ, last updated July 15, 2026, explains that requirements vary by feature.

How does Windows decide which processor runs an AI task?

Windows does not automatically route all AI work to the NPU. In Windows ML, execution providers connect model inference to available hardware. Software can target an NPU, GPU, or CPU; a runtime may select an available provider or use another processor when the preferred one is unavailable. Some NPU-targeted work also requires a supported model format or optimization.

For app developers, Microsoft’s Windows ML overview explains execution providers and hardware targets. Its developer guide covers model support and implementation details.

How can you check whether your Windows PC has an NPU?

  1. Identify the exact PC and processor. Check the model and processor specifications using the PC maker’s documentation or Windows system information. Confirm that the hardware includes an NPU and look for its rated performance; do not infer NPU support from a general “AI PC” description alone.
  2. Verify support for the feature you care about. Check that feature’s requirements for your Windows release, hardware, driver, and model. An NPU can be present without being supported by a particular app.
  3. Check activity in Task Manager. On supported systems, open Task Manager and select Performance to look for an NPU view. If the NPU is idle, that alone does not prove it is unsupported; the current workload may not use it.

Microsoft documents NPU utilization and hardware targeting in its Windows ML overview.

What an NPU does—and does not—mean in practice

  • It provides specialized hardware for supported AI inference; it does not replace the CPU or GPU.
  • It is designed for efficient, sustained on-device AI work, but actual speed and battery use depend on the device and workload.
  • On-device execution is possible for compatible models and apps, but an NPU alone does not guarantee that an app processes data locally or delivers a particular privacy outcome.
  • To know whether a feature needs an NPU, check that feature’s requirements rather than relying on the PC’s marketing label.
