Amazon’s “Frequently returned item” badge is a warning that a product has a higher customer-initiated return rate than similar products, according to Amazon’s seller guidance. It does not disclose a universal return-rate threshold, explain why customers returned a particular item, or prove that every unit is defective.
What does “Frequently returned” mean on Amazon?
Amazon describes the badge as a way to alert shoppers to products with high return rates so they can check the listing details and customer reviews before buying. Its seller guidance says Amazon compares a product’s customer-initiated return rate with rates for similar products, taking into account product type, department, and average sale price.

Amazon says delivery problems and fraudulent returns are excluded from the return rate used for badging. The label is therefore a comparative warning signal—not a public count of returned units or a diagnosis of what is wrong with the product.
How does Amazon decide which products get the badge?
Amazon has not published one universal percentage that triggers the badge. Its seller guidance says a listing needs sufficient recent sales for Amazon to determine a rate, and that the badging calculation uses returns that have matured and been fully processed.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
That timing helps explain why a seller’s dashboard figures may not match the return rate Amazon used to decide whether to display the badge. Amazon’s public-facing material does not establish identical criteria or availability across every marketplace.
Should you buy a product with the label?
The badge alone cannot tell you whether a product will suit your needs. Before purchasing, compare the listing with what you need the product to do, and check whether reviews point to a recurring problem that matters to you.

- Check the listing: Read the description, specifications, dimensions, sizing, and fit or compatibility details that apply to your use.
- Look for repeated review themes: A pattern of complaints about the same feature may be more relevant than isolated comments. Consider whether that issue would affect your own use.
- Separate a mismatch from a defect: The badge does not say why a specific customer returned the item. It should not be treated as proof that every unit is faulty.
Amazon also describes post-purchase support for eligible items through Your Orders. Depending on the item and eligibility, that support can include setup help, troubleshooting, manufacturer contact information, or help with missing or broken parts; replacements or exchanges may also be available. These support options do not change the meaning of the badge.

Amazon’s seller guidance says the Voice of the Customer dashboard can show badged and at-risk ASINs, three- and 12-month return-rate data, and suggested rates. These dashboard metrics are useful signals for sellers, but they are not an exact public return count and may differ from the matured-return calculation used for badging.

Amazon recommends that sellers review listing accuracy, images, sizing information, product quality, packaging, and the return reasons shown in the dashboard. Its guidance says the badge is removed automatically when the customer-initiated return rate comes in line with similar products. The guidance reviewed does not describe a separate exception or appeal process.
