For ordinary formatting, leave Allocation unit size set to Default. It is the file system’s cluster size, and Microsoft recommends the default for general use. Windows chooses a value based on the volume size when you do not specify one; there is no single default that applies to every file system and drive.
What does allocation unit size mean?
Allocation unit size is another name for cluster size: the granularity the file system uses to allocate space for file data. Microsoft describes a cluster as the smallest unit the file system can reference. Because space is allocated in whole units, a file that does not fill its final cluster can leave some of that space unused.
The setting appears in Windows’ format options because file systems can use different allocation sizes. Microsoft’s FORMAT command documentation lists valid sizes for FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, and ReFS, and says Windows chooses based on volume size if no unit size is specified.
Should you leave allocation unit size at Default?
Yes, unless a specific application or workload requires a different setting. Microsoft’s FORMAT documentation says: “If you don’t specify unit size, it’s chosen based on volume size. Default settings are recommended for general use.” That is the safest choice for a typical Windows drive rather than guessing that a larger cluster will make it faster.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The numeric default depends on both the file system and volume. For NTFS, Microsoft’s NTFS overview identifies 4 KB as the default cluster size in its capacity table. That figure should not be treated as the universal default for FAT, exFAT, ReFS, or every volume size.
When does a different size make sense?
NTFS volumes for Data Deduplication or very large files
Microsoft recommends 64 KB allocation units, along with large file record segments, for NTFS volumes used with Data Deduplication or hosting large files such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB. This is a workload-specific recommendation, not general-purpose tuning advice.

When NTFS compression matters
NTFS compression is unsupported when allocation units exceed 4096 bytes, according to Microsoft’s FORMAT documentation. If you need NTFS compression, do not choose a larger unit size.
When an application specifies a requirement
Follow the application or storage workload’s documented requirements when they call for a non-default cluster size. Otherwise, retain Default; the official guidance does not establish a general performance advantage from choosing a larger allocation unit.

What do NTFS cluster sizes change about capacity?
Microsoft’s NTFS overview lists the following volume and file capacity figures by cluster size and supported cluster count. These are capacity limits in Microsoft’s table, not recommendations for choosing a size for an ordinary drive.
| NTFS cluster size | Largest volume/file size listed | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 4 KB (default) | 16 TB | Microsoft NTFS overview, updated 2025-06-18 |
| 64 KB | 256 TB | Microsoft NTFS overview, updated 2025-06-18 |
| 2048 KB | 8 PB | Microsoft NTFS overview, updated 2025-06-18 |
Microsoft notes that services or applications can impose lower limits. For example, Previous Versions or some backup applications that depend on Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) may limit a volume to 64 TB. Check the capabilities of the Windows version and applications in use before treating a file-system capacity figure as usable in practice.

Why does Windows still mention floppy disks?
Microsoft’s current FORMAT documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and still includes floppy-specific sizing options, including 1.44 MB floppy values, as well as an example that formats a floppy in drive A. That explains why floppy-era terminology remains in current formatting documentation. It does not establish when the Windows File Explorer format dialog was written or prove that its present implementation dates from a particular era.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do FAT and FAT32 need manual cluster-size tuning?
Usually not. Microsoft documents cluster-count limits for these file systems: FAT permits no more than 65,526 clusters, while FAT32 permits 65,527 to 4,177,917 clusters. FORMAT stops if a requested cluster size cannot meet the applicable requirements. These implementation limits are not a reason to manually tune a typical drive; keep the default unless a documented need says otherwise.
