Allocation unit size is the smallest amount of filesystem space assigned to hold a file’s data. Because files are allocated in whole units, a file can occupy more space on a drive than its actual file size. For most general-purpose drives, keep the formatting tool’s default unless you have a specific capacity, workload, or feature requirement.

What allocation unit size means

A filesystem divides a volume into equal-sized allocation units and assigns them to file data. Windows documentation commonly calls an allocation unit a cluster. This is a filesystem setting, not the drive’s advertised capacity, and it is distinct from the physical-sector units used by a storage device. Microsoft explains the distinction in its file allocation documentation.

Think of each unit as a box that can hold part of a file. The filesystem allocates enough whole boxes to contain the data, including a final box that may not be full. The unused space in that final allocated unit is often called slack space. A 1-byte file may therefore use one full allocation unit for its data, while a file slightly larger than one unit needs another.

This is a simplified model: filesystem bookkeeping, sparse files, compression, resident data, and other features can affect how file contents consume storage.

Why “size on disk” can exceed file size

File size usually describes the file’s logical data. “Size on disk” reflects how much storage is allocated to hold it, which is rounded up to whole allocation units under ordinary cluster allocation. For example, if a file is smaller than one unit, its data still needs a unit; if it is just over one unit, it needs two. The difference is most noticeable for volumes containing many small files.

Smaller units generally reduce this rounding waste. Larger units can leave more unused space at the ends of small files, though the exact result depends on the workload and filesystem features.

How to compare allocation unit sizes

Consideration Smaller units Larger units
Small-file storage Generally less unused space at the end of each file. Can leave more unused space, especially when there are many small files.
Filesystem limits May limit supported volume or file sizes, depending on the filesystem and operating-system version. Can enable larger documented limits for some filesystems and configurations.
Feature compatibility On NTFS, allocation units of 4 KB or less allow NTFS compression. NTFS compression is unsupported above 4096 bytes.
Workload fit May suit general use where reducing small-file waste matters. Microsoft documents 64 KB NTFS units for Data Deduplication volumes and certain large-file workloads.
Available choices Choices depend on the filesystem and formatting tool. Do not assume different operating systems offer the same options.

These are tradeoffs, not a universal speed ranking. Microsoft’s guidance describes filesystem limits and specific workload recommendations; it does not establish that choosing a larger unit makes ordinary storage faster.

NTFS: defaults, limits, and special cases

The following figures are Windows-specific NTFS examples from Microsoft, not estimates of usable drive capacity. Microsoft lists 4 KB as the default NTFS cluster size. Its NTFS overview says the maximum volume size depends on cluster size, the number of clusters, and Windows version. In the sizing model shown there, 4 KB clusters correspond to a 16 TB limit and 64 KB clusters to a 256 TB limit. Windows Server 2019 and later, and Windows 10 version 1709 and later, support NTFS volumes up to 8 PB; earlier Windows versions support up to 256 TB. These are documented filesystem limits, not a recommendation to format at a particular size. See Microsoft’s NTFS overview and volume size limits.

When 64 KB may fit

Microsoft recommends formatting NTFS volumes with 64 KB allocation units for Data Deduplication and for large files such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB, along with the large file record segment option. That guidance applies to those workloads; it is not a general-purpose upgrade. The format command reference also states that NTFS compression is unsupported when allocation units exceed 4096 bytes. If compression matters, that feature constraint may rule out 64 KB.

What to know about exFAT and removable drives

For exFAT, cluster size is determined using the sectors-per-cluster and sector-size fields. Microsoft’s exFAT specification describes how implementations can increase cluster size to control the number of clusters and avoid very large FAT structures. The specification allows a broad range of cluster sizes, but the choices a user can make depend on the formatter and device compatibility.

FAT filesystems are also common on removable media: the Linux mkfs.fat manual identifies FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32 as widely used on USB sticks and SD cards. That describes a common context, not a recommendation for a particular allocation unit size.

What size should you choose?

For a general-purpose drive, use the formatting tool’s default. Choose a nondefault size only when you have a specific requirement and have checked the relevant filesystem limits, the operating-system versions that must mount the volume, and feature constraints such as NTFS compression.

  1. Identify the filesystem and intended workload. A Windows NTFS volume used for ordinary files is a different case from a deduplication volume or one holding very large VHDX files.
  2. Check the formatter’s choices and defaults. Available allocation unit sizes vary by filesystem and formatting tool; do not assume one tool’s options apply to another.
  3. Check limits and feature compatibility. For NTFS, verify the Windows version and volume-size requirements, and whether compression is needed.
  4. Back up before formatting. Changing allocation unit size is ordinarily a formatting choice, and reformatting can erase data.
