AI wearables are best understood as hands-free ways to access sensors and digital assistance—not as self-contained, all-knowing computers. Smart glasses can combine microphones, speakers and cameras, and some models add a display; a wrist band can provide another input method. A separate handheld device such as Rabbit R1 represents a different design. What these products can do depends on the model, software, network connection and region, and official feature descriptions do not by themselves establish accuracy or real-world outcomes.
What AI wearables can do now
The clearest use is in-the-moment interaction: asking a question, using a camera or audio input, and hearing or viewing a response without reaching for a phone. The exact combination of sensing and output varies by product. Meta’s developer documentation describes camera, audio, display and input capabilities for glasses, but that platform description is not a promise that every app or feature works on every pair.
Smart glasses: voice, camera and assistance
Meta’s product page for Meta Ray-Ban Display describes a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, built-in viewfinder, six-microphone array and open-ear speakers. These specifications illustrate one glasses design; they should not be generalized to all AI glasses. Meta’s developer portal describes three routes for builders: extend a mobile app with the Device Access Toolkit, build a standalone web app, or connect a service to Meta AI through developer connectors. The portal presents some connectors as a developer preview and says additional discovery surfaces are forthcoming. Meta Ray-Ban Display product details · Meta Wearables developer portal

Wrist input through muscle signals
Meta describes the Neural Band as a companion input for navigating and selecting on Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses. It uses surface electromyography (EMG)—signals associated with muscle activity at the wrist—and machine learning to translate them into commands. Meta says the translation runs locally and can work without a hand appearing in a camera’s view. Those are the company’s descriptions, not independent validation of performance. A handheld alternative
Rabbit introduced R1 in 2024 as a standalone handheld device running rabbit OS, designed for natural-language tasks involving apps. The company called its approach a Large Action Model and said it was intended to learn and replicate actions on interfaces. That launch announcement documents the product’s concept and positioning; it does not establish current availability or independent task reliability. R1 is useful as a design contrast to glasses, not as a benchmark for how well today’s AI wearables perform. Rabbit’s R1 launch announcement
How the form factor changes the experience
| Design | Typical interaction emphasis | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio-first smart glasses | Voice, camera input and open-ear audio | Which camera and assistant features are available on the exact model, and whether processing needs a phone or network |
| Display glasses with wrist input | Visual responses plus navigation or selection through a companion input band | Display capabilities, band compatibility, and which actions run locally |
| Standalone handheld assistant | A separate device for assistant interaction and app-related actions | Current availability, supported services, and demonstrated task reliability |
These are interaction differences, not a ranking. Choose by the task: quick contextual questions, hands-free communication, capturing media, accessibility use, or actions involving connected apps. Comfort, battery life, prescription and fit options, support, and current availability also matter, but the cited product information does not provide a complete comparison of those factors.

Where AI wearables still fall short
Some capabilities depend on cloud computing
Meta says glasses have limited room for computing compared with a phone or computer, and that workloads such as streaming transcription, contextual search and long-term recall can require more computing power than glasses can host locally. Meta describes Private Processing, a confidential-computing approach for handling some work off-device. That is the company’s explanation of its architecture and mitigation; it does not prove that every threat is eliminated or that every feature uses the same processing path. Meta’s Private Processing explanation
Camera indicators do not tell the whole story
Camera behavior depends on the action and model generation. Ray-Ban’s support FAQ says the capture LEDs turn on for gallery or streaming capture, while some newer models can use the camera for AI features without activating the capture LED. First-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses still activate the LED for some AI features because of hardware limitations. The FAQ also says photos and videos used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history and that facial-recognition technology is not used. These are vendor disclosures, not an independent privacy audit. Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses FAQ

Meta says users can configure preferences for captures, voice and notifications and manage information shared with the company. Before using a camera-enabled wearable around other people, check the device’s indicator behavior and privacy settings rather than assuming that an indicator always signals every camera use or that a camera is always recording. Features vary by model, region and software
Generation, country, companion-app support, language, software updates and connected services can all affect what a person can use. A feature described for a product family or developer platform may not be available on a particular device or in a particular location. Confirm the exact model and current support information before relying on a feature.

How to evaluate an AI wearable before relying on it
- Match the device to the task. Decide whether you need voice and open-ear audio, a visual display, camera input, a wrist input accessory, or a separate handheld assistant.
- Check what works without a connection. Identify which functions run on the wearable, which need a paired phone, and which depend on a service or cloud processing. Do not infer local operation from a feature description alone.
- Verify privacy behavior for the exact generation. Find out what activates visible indicators, what settings control capture and voice data, and what the maker says is retained. Consider nearby people when using a camera.
- Confirm compatibility and availability. Check country, phone and operating-system requirements, language support, app or service integrations, and whether the feature is generally available or in preview.
- Keep consequential decisions elsewhere. Do not treat a wearable assistant as a dependable medical authority or assume a camera-based answer is correct without checking it.
