There is no verified, stable list of pages that AI engines cite for questions about LLM gateways. The available evidence explains how several products present sources and what some publishers can do to be eligible, but it does not show which gateway sites are cited most often. To answer that, you need a dated, repeatable test across engines—not a vendor list or a guess.

What can be said about citations for LLM gateway questions?

No controlled, transparent audit in the available evidence measures the URLs ChatGPT, Google’s generative search features, Perplexity, or Gemini cite for a defined set of LLM gateway prompts. That means there is no support for naming a gateway vendor, review, or directory as the one AI engines “actually cite” most often, or for assigning citation shares.

What is documented is narrower: products describe different citation interfaces and eligibility rules. Those facts help explain how citations may appear, but they do not predict which particular pages will be selected for a gateway question.

How the major answer products describe sources

Product or surface What its documentation establishes What it does not establish
ChatGPT Search OpenAI says search results are ranked using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. A site must allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl it to be eligible for inclusion. OpenAI states, “Placement is not guaranteed.” OpenAI Help Center: Searching the web with ChatGPT It does not publish a complete ranking formula or guarantee that an eligible page will be cited for an LLM gateway query.
Google Search generative features Google says sites do not need special AI markup, an llms.txt file, prescribed content chunking, or inauthentic mentions to appear in its generative features. It recommends high-quality content and ordinary SEO practices; structured data may still be useful for other SEO purposes. Google also says, “There’s no ideal page length, and in the end, make pages for your audience, not just for generative AI search.” Google Search Central: Google’s Guide to Optimizing for Generative AI Features on Google Search This is guidance for Google Search, not a rule for ChatGPT, Perplexity, or other answer engines, and it does not identify which gateway pages Google will cite.
Perplexity Its product page describes answers as sourced and cited and says readers can inspect sources. Perplexity: Perplexity Search: Accurate, Cited AI Answers for Every Question The product description does not specify which sources it selects for LLM gateway prompts or publish a general selection formula.
Gemini Apps Google says source links may be associated with parts of a response; some responses do not have a Sources button. Links may lead to public websites or user-connected materials. Google Gemini Apps Help: View related sources from Gemini Apps Source availability varies by response, and the help page does not reveal a stable list of cited gateway pages.

Do not treat Google Search generative features and Gemini Apps as one surface, or assume that citation behavior transfers between them. A product’s search mode, account context, and interface can affect what sources are shown.

Why a citation does not prove the answer

A source link is a pointer to inspect, not proof that the linked page supports every sentence beside it. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce inaccurate or misleading text, including fabricated citations, and recommends checking important information against the source itself. Published studies also caution against treating citations as a guarantee of accuracy or thorough source review. A 2024 study by Venkit, Laban, Zhou, Mao, and Wu included 21 participants and evaluated You.com, Perplexity, and Bing Chat; its abstract reports frequent hallucination and inaccurate citation among the limitations observed. Venkit et al., “Search Engines in an AI Era: The False Promise of Factual and Verifiable Source-Cited Responses”

A 2025 FAccT paper found that participants in its study consulted fewer sources with answer engines than in traditional search conditions. In that study’s specific conditions, the mean number of citation hovers was 2.10 for Perplexity, 2.00 for Bing Copilot, and 11.81 for YouChat. These are study results, not current platform-wide user statistics. How to check whether a cited page supports a gateway claim

  1. Open the cited URL. Do not rely only on the title, snippet, or the model’s summary of the source.
  2. Match the claim to the page. Check whether the cited page directly supports the exact statement—for example, a gateway’s model coverage, routing features, pricing, or data-handling terms.
  3. Check the relevant details and date. Look for the applicable product tier, region, version, and publication or update date. A source can be real but stale or about a different offering.
  4. Separate source types. Vendor documentation can establish what a vendor says its product does; it is not independent confirmation. A directory or review may compare products, but check its methods and the date of its information.
  5. Verify consequential claims independently. For a decision involving cost, security, or compatibility, consult the underlying vendor documentation or other appropriate primary evidence rather than treating an AI citation as validation.

How to run a fair comparison of AI engines

If you need to know which pages are cited for LLM gateway questions, define the prompts and capture the results instead of inferring a ranking from a few answers. Keep product surfaces separate: ChatGPT Search, Gemini Apps, and Google AI Overviews should not be collapsed into a single “Google” or “AI search” result.

  1. Choose the exact surfaces and modes. Record the product, answer surface, and whether web search or browsing is enabled. Note account or product mode where relevant.
  2. Use the same prompts. Write a fixed set that reflects the question you want to answer, such as finding gateway documentation or comparing gateways for a specified use case. Preserve exact wording and intent across engines.
  3. Record test context. For every run, save the date, location, and relevant account or product settings. These details matter because results can vary by context.
  4. Capture each source exactly. Save the answer and exact cited URL, and classify the publisher as vendor documentation, independent review, directory, forum, academic source, or another clear category. Record when no citation is displayed.
  5. Check support at the claim level. For each citation, note which specific claim it supports and whether the page actually substantiates it. A source appearing beside an answer is not enough to count as accurate support.
  6. Repeat runs and report variation. Track duplicate URLs and whether sources recur across runs. Publish the prompt, surfaces, dates, context, and method alongside any counts so readers can interpret the result.

Gateway response metadata can help with a separate, technical question: what citation data an application receives from an API. One LLM Gateway documentation page shows URL citation annotations and a search_results list for some search-grounded models; it says formats vary and date fields appear only when providers report them. That is an example from one gateway, not an industry-wide format. LLM Gateway Docs: Native Web Search

What publishers should do instead of chasing AI-search shortcuts

For Google’s generative search features, Google does not require special AI markup or an llms.txt file, and it rejects prescribed chunking and inauthentic mentions as prerequisites. Its advice is to focus on useful, high-quality pages and ordinary SEO fundamentals. ChatGPT Search has a distinct eligibility condition: a site must permit OAI-Searchbot crawling to be eligible, but eligibility is not placement. Neither set of guidance establishes a universal optimization recipe for all answer engines.
