AI-driven attacks are not one new kind of cyberattack. The term covers both attackers using AI to assist familiar operations—such as phishing, research or coding—and attacks that target AI models or agents. AI can make some operations easier to tailor, produce or scale, but available reports do not establish that every AI-assisted attack is more successful or impossible to detect.

What does “AI-driven attack” mean?

The phrase has two distinct meanings. In one, an attacker uses AI as a tool during an operation against a person or conventional computer system. In the other, the AI model or agent itself is the target. Keeping those meanings separate helps explain both the risks and the defenses.

Type What is targeted What AI is doing
AI-assisted attack A person, organization, or conventional system Helping an attacker with tasks such as drafting messages, researching targets, or writing or adapting code
Attack against an AI system An AI model or agent The system’s inputs, behavior, data, or connected tools are manipulated or misused

NIST’s adversarial machine-learning taxonomy includes evasion, poisoning, privacy, and misuse attacks against generative AI systems. Those are risks to AI systems; they are not interchangeable with an attacker using AI to write a phishing email.

How can attackers use AI in familiar attacks?

AI can assist with parts of an existing operation rather than inventing an entirely new one. It may help produce or adapt text, research a target, or support coding and other attack tasks. The amount of assistance and the capability involved vary by actor and use.

More tailored impersonation

Generated messages can be adapted to a target’s language, tone, or institutional context. Personal information available online can help an attacker construct a plausible trust narrative. NIST describes AI-assisted spear-phishing that can use realistic text, audio, and video, as well as synthetic websites and links.

Support across operational tasks

Threat reports describe AI assistance with research, vulnerability work, coding, and other parts of an attack lifecycle. OpenAI’s account of a phishing and scripting operation describes multilingual email generation and help with tooling. These reports document particular actors and uses; they do not show that AI produces the same results for every attacker.

Why can these attacks be harder to stop?

The difficulty is not that AI makes an attack undetectable. It is that some familiar warning signs can be less dependable, while attackers may get help with more of the work involved in targeting and execution.

  • Impersonation can use more than text. A convincing voice, video, or image may make an unusual request seem more credible, so appearance alone is a weak basis for trusting it.
  • Messages can be more specific. A tailored message that reflects a person’s role, language, or public information may seem more relevant than a generic scam.
  • Attackers can get assistance across tasks. AI may help with research, writing, or code, potentially making parts of an existing workflow more efficient. That does not establish a general increase in attack success.
  • Connected agents can take actions. If an agent can read data or use tools, malicious instructions in content it processes may have consequences beyond persuading a person to click a link.

What changes when an AI agent is involved?

A human-directed scam tries to persuade a person to act. An agent hijacking attempt instead exploits the way an AI agent processes content and instructions. NIST describes indirect prompt injection, also called agent hijacking, in which hostile content in sources such as email, websites, or code repositories can be treated as instructions by an agent.

The potential impact depends in part on what the agent is allowed to access or do. NIST describes possible unintended actions including exposing sensitive data or downloading and running malicious code. An agent with narrow permissions has fewer ways to cause harm than one with broad access to data and tools.

What does the evidence establish—and what does it not?

Reports support a range of observed uses, not a single universal level of attacker capability. In its October 2025 account of a threat cluster, OpenAI said the operators primarily sought incremental efficiency in existing phishing and tooling workflows, and that its model did not introduce novel offensive capabilities. Later Google reporting describes more developed uses, including AI-assisted vulnerability exploitation, augmented operations, and agentic workflows. These accounts concern different actors, periods, and uses; they are not contradictory measurements of one overall trend.

The cited material does not provide a comparable independent statistic showing how much more successful AI-assisted attacks are, or how much harder they are to stop than non-AI attacks. It is more accurate to describe the mechanisms and documented cases than to claim a universal percentage increase or that detection is impossible.

How can you reduce the risk?

Verify consequential requests independently

If a request involves money, credentials, access, or urgent secrecy, confirm it through a second channel whose contact details you obtained independently. For example, call a known number rather than one included in the unexpected message. This check does not depend on spotting whether a voice, image, or message was generated by AI.

Maintain core email and account defenses

Keep authentication safeguards, email security, staff training, and incident-response procedures in place. NIST’s initial preliminary draft of its Cybersecurity Framework Profile for AI emphasizes integrated defenses alongside personnel training and email and authentication security. These controls remain relevant as messages and impersonations change.

Restrict agent access and review its inputs

Give an AI agent only the data access and tool permissions it needs for its task. Review how it handles instructions and content from external sources, and avoid allowing untrusted material to trigger sensitive actions without appropriate checks. These measures address the risk of hostile content being treated as instructions.

Apply security fundamentals to AI deployments

NIST’s summary of AI-agent security responses reports broad agreement that foundational cybersecurity practices still apply, although they need adaptation for agent-specific risks. Treat an agent’s permissions, connected tools, and data access as part of the system’s security design rather than as incidental settings.
