Choose for the child’s interest, ability to handle the controls, and comfort with short cause-and-effect play. Younger children can explore sequencing through ordinary play, and older children can begin as beginners too.
Why about four can be a reasonable starting point
The Raspberry Pi Foundation says that by about age four, a child is likely to have the motor skills and understanding to use a simple toy that introduces coding basics. One example is a floor robot controlled by pressing directional buttons: the child enters a short sequence, then watches the robot move. That makes the basic idea—commands produce actions—concrete and observable. Raspberry Pi Foundation
This is general guidance, not a readiness test. Children develop at different speeds, and visual programming is a possible later activity rather than a required next step. There is no need to advance a child through a product ladder or start coding toys to prepare for school.
How to tell whether a toy fits your child
Watch what happens during play rather than relying on age alone. A suitable first toy lets the child try a command, see what happens, and try again without needing to manage a long sequence or complicated setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Can they use the controls? Look for buttons, blocks, or pieces they can comfortably grasp and operate.
- Can they try a short sequence? The first activity can involve just a few commands and an immediate result.
- Does the format interest them? A child who likes movement or pretend play may enjoy a floor robot; another may prefer arranging physical blocks or building.
- Can you join in? Caregiver interaction can support play and problem-solving. Ask what the child thinks will happen, then explore together when the result differs.
For children with motor or developmental needs, choose around their individual abilities and consider asking a relevant clinician or therapist for guidance. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that packaging age recommendations may not reflect developmental capacity for children with special needs. American Academy of Pediatrics
Screen-free robot or app?
A first coding activity does not have to involve a screen. Tangible toys let children handle commands directly: for example, they might press directional buttons on a floor robot or arrange physical blocks into a sequence. The OECD’s 2023 report says evidence suggests tangible tools may be more effective as a first programming introduction in the early years, and notes that robotic kits can introduce computer science ideas hands-on, sometimes without screen exposure. It does not follow that every screen-free toy is educational or right for every child. OECD, Empowering Young Children in the Digital Age

If you choose an app-based activity, the AAP’s parent guidance recommends that children under five use developmentally appropriate computer or video games with a parent or caregiver. The relevant question is not simply “screen or no screen,” but whether the activity suits the child and leaves room for shared, active play. HealthyChildren.org, American Academy of Pediatrics
The UK government’s 2026 report on screen use by children under five applies to England; it should not be treated as universal guidance for families in other countries. UK Department for Education and Department of Health and Social Care

What kinds of toys might work as a first step?
| Format | What the child does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Button-controlled floor robot | Presses directional buttons, then observes the robot follow the commands. | A clear, physical introduction to sequencing. Bee-Bot is one example described by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, not an endorsement or a universal best choice. Check its current age label and availability with the maker. |
| Tangible block-based kit | Arranges physical pieces to create and test a sequence. | Can offer a screen-free way to explore commands for children who enjoy hands-on arranging. KIBO is described by its maker as a hands-on, screen-free kit for PreK through elementary learners; that description does not establish any individual child’s readiness. |
| Visual programming activity | Uses on-screen visual blocks to build instructions. | May suit an older or more experienced child, but it is not a required stage after a physical toy. |

The AAP recommends choosing toys that fit a child’s development and encourage imagination, problem-solving, and interaction with caregivers. It also cautions that a toy should support play rather than direct it, and that much of the evidence on toys and development involves children playing with caregivers rather than alone. A digital toy marketed as educational does not necessarily offer more learning opportunities than another toy. American Academy of Pediatrics; OECD
