A VPN can route your internet traffic through a server elsewhere, changing the public IP address and the network-based location a streaming service may infer. It cannot grant rights to a game, remove a blackout, or ensure the service will accept your connection. Before traveling, check whether the exact event is available in your destination, on your subscription and device.
What a VPN can and cannot do for watching sports while traveling
What it can do
A VPN routes covered internet traffic through a VPN server. The service you connect to may therefore see the VPN server’s public IP address rather than the address assigned by your hotel, mobile carrier, or home internet provider. That can affect the network-based location the service infers; it does not change your physical location or the territory where a game’s rights apply.
Location checks can involve more than an IP address. ESPN says it may use different technologies to verify geographic location and requires location access on the device to use its service. Google Pixel Help likewise cautions that its VPN cannot change IP location to access online content unavailable in a region. Google Pixel Help’s VPN guidance explains that limit.
What it cannot do
- Grant a subscription or add a game to your package. You still need an eligible account and access to the event through the service.
- Override broadcast rights or blackouts. Availability can depend on the event, date, location, and exclusive rights held by broadcasters.
- Change service or device rules. A VPN does not make an unsupported device eligible or remove a requirement such as device location access.
- Guarantee a successful stream. The service may verify location in multiple ways, and a VPN connection or travel network can interfere with verification or streaming.
Why a subscription may not include the game you want
Sports subscriptions are subject to territorial rights and event-specific restrictions. ESPN says some live events may be blacked out depending on where the service is accessed, and its blackout guidance says: “If you do not enable location access on your device, you will not be able to access the ESPN service.” See ESPN Fan Support’s blackout policy.

MLB’s terms describe restrictions based on the game date, viewer location, and local, regional, national, and international broadcast exclusivities. MLB may check whether a subscriber is outside the relevant home television territory and may require authorization to use location data. Its terms also warn that circumventing blackout or other use restrictions can result in immediate subscription termination and other consequences. Check MLB’s blackout and available-games information for the relevant event and location.
How travel access differs by service
| Service or product | What the provider says | What to check before travel |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN subscription | ESPN says a subscriber using a compatible computer can access a subscription from anywhere. This is not a guarantee for every ESPN product, event, device, or trip. | Confirm the product and event, device compatibility, destination access, and any blackout. ESPN says MLB.TV on ESPN is available only in the U.S. market and remains subject to MLB blackouts. ESPN’s subscription access guidance |
| MLB.TV | Live games are subject to location and broadcast exclusivity restrictions. How travel networks and devices affect streaming
A hotel, workplace, airport, or other public network may block video services or handle location checks differently from your usual connection. MLB identifies hotel, corporate, VPN, cellular, satellite, and in-motion connections as factors that can affect location verification. That warning does not mean every such connection will fail; it does mean you should not rely on a particular network without checking the provider’s guidance. See MLB’s streaming and blackout help.
Device rules also vary. NFL guidance limits NFL+ live games to phones and tablets, while other live games have different device rules. A tablet may be useful if it is supported for the product you plan to watch, but it does not change territorial rights or location checks. Confirm the supported device for your specific event in the provider’s NFL+ details.

Before you travel: check the event, place, and device
- Look up the exact event and date. Use the league or service’s official availability or blackout tool for the destination, not a general promise about a subscription.
- Confirm territory and rights. Check that the product works in the country or region you will visit and that the event is not exclusive to another broadcaster or blacked out there.
- Verify your device and account requirements. Confirm whether live viewing works on your phone, tablet, computer, or TV, and whether it requires device location access or a TV-provider login.
- Check the travel network. Find out whether the hotel, workplace, or public Wi-Fi permits streaming. Consider whether you will instead use cellular service, satellite internet, or another connection.
- Test access ahead of game time. Try the official app or website using the device and type of connection you expect to use, while following the service’s location and account requirements.
- If access fails, follow the provider’s instructions. Consult the official availability guidance or support. Repeatedly changing VPN servers does not make an event authorized or guarantee access.
