A browser is the software on your device that requests web resources and displays the result. A web server receives those requests and returns files or information, sometimes generated for that request. In short, the browser asks and renders; the server responds. The browser does not become the server simply because it shows a web page.

Those are roles in an exchange, not necessarily two separate pieces of hardware: a server can mean software, a computer, or both working together. Understanding the distinction makes it easier to follow what happens when you open a site, submit a form, or see an error.

What is the difference between a browser and a web server?

A browser is a client: it requests resources and presents the results to a person. A web server is the system that receives requests and sends back resources or generated results. The browser usually runs on the reader’s device; the server runs wherever the site is hosted, though one computer can play both roles.

Browser Web server
Acts as a client and makes requests Receives requests and sends responses
Runs on a device used to view the site Runs on a computer, in server software, or through both together
Processes returned content and renders what the person sees Returns hosted files or produces a response using application code and stored data

MDN describes the terminology precisely: “The term web server can refer to hardware or software, or both of them working together.” That distinction matters: people may call the computer a server, the software running on it a server, or the combined setup a web server.

“Client” and “server” describe jobs in a particular exchange. They are not permanent labels attached to a particular kind of machine. A computer on a home network, for example, can serve files to a browser running on the same computer or another one. In that exchange, the browser is the client and the serving system is the server.

What happens when you open a website?

Opening a website involves finding its destination, requesting a resource, receiving a response, and rendering the returned content. A page can also refer to other resources, which can lead the browser to make additional requests.

  1. The browser looks up the destination. When you enter a website address, the browser uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to help find the destination for that site.
  2. The browser sends a request. It asks the web server for a resource using HTTP, the protocol used for web requests and responses.
  3. The server returns a response. The response may contain an existing file or content created for the request. It also includes a status code that indicates the outcome.
  4. The browser requests referenced resources. The returned HTML can refer to CSS, JavaScript, images, and other media. The browser may request those resources as it processes the page.
  5. The browser renders the result. It processes the returned materials to display the page and handle client-side interactions.

This sequence is a useful model of a page visit, not a claim that a page always arrives as one finished block. A site may need several resources, and the browser can make more than one request while assembling what appears on screen. MDN’s overview of how the web works explains the roles of DNS, HTTP, clients, and servers in this exchange.

Does the browser or the server make the webpage?

Both can contribute, but they do different work. The server supplies files or generates the response; the browser processes returned HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and media to render the page and manage client-side behavior.

For a simple site, the server may send files that already exist, such as an HTML document and its associated styles and images. The browser interprets those materials and displays them. A server does not need to send a screenshot of a finished page for the browser to show it.

Other sites assemble some or all of a response when a request arrives. Application code can select content or retrieve stored information before the server responds. A request for a page is not the same as receiving the site’s entire application or database: the server can return only the result needed for that request.

This is the usual division of responsibility, not a rule that every computation must happen on one side. A page may depend on work performed by the server and work performed by the browser. MDN’s client-server overview introduces the difference between client-side and server-side programming.

What is the difference between static and dynamic responses?

A static response can come from an existing file, while a dynamic response can be assembled by application code when the server receives a request. Both use the same broad pattern: the browser asks, and the server responds.

Static serving

With static serving, the requested resource is an existing file that the server returns. The browser still has work to do: it processes the returned material and renders it for the user. “Static” describes how the resource is supplied, not whether the browser merely displays a pre-rendered picture.

Dynamic serving

With dynamic serving, the server can use application code and stored data to decide what to return. The response may differ depending on the request or the information the application retrieves. The browser receives the response and renders or processes it just as it does other web content.

These descriptions explain common arrangements rather than drawing an absolute line around where all work happens. A site can use both existing files and generated responses, with the browser also performing client-side work.

What do HTTP methods and status codes tell you?

An HTTP request includes a method that indicates the kind of request being made; the response includes a status code that reports an outcome. For example, 200 means success and 404 means the requested resource was not found.

A status code describes the response to a particular request. A 404 tells you that the requested resource was not found; it is not the same statement as “the browser could not contact any server.” MDN explains the request-and-response relationship and these example status codes in its client-server overview.

Not every browser-to-server request is just “open this page.” A form submission or a search within a site also sends a request. The response may update the page or supply information without requiring the browser to reload the entire page. The important point is that a user action can trigger a request-response exchange even when the visible page does not appear to start over.

How are browsers, websites, and search engines different?

A browser is software for accessing and displaying web pages. A website is a group of related pages and resources; a search engine is a service that helps people find web content.

These terms describe different parts of the experience. You can use a browser to open a search engine, and use that service to find a website. The search engine is not the browser, and the browser is not the website’s server. MDN’s beginner guide explicitly distinguishes a web page, website, web server, and search engine.

Does HTTPS change which side is the client or server?

No. HTTPS preserves the same basic roles: the browser requests resources and the server responds. HTTPS adds protection for data while it is being transported between them; it does not turn the browser into a server or change what those terms mean.

That protection is about the connection, not a general guarantee that a website is trustworthy in every respect. The browser remains the client, and the web server remains the system answering its requests. MDN explains the relationship between HTTP and HTTPS in its guide to how the web works.

Can you try the client-server exchange on a computer you already own?

Yes. A local server can make the browser-server relationship concrete without requiring a separate computer, paid hosting, or a special browser. The browser can request a page from server software running on the same computer or another computer on the local network.

For example, an official Raspberry Pi magazine tutorial describes serving local HTML with Apache and visiting the server from a browser on the Raspberry Pi or another computer on the network. This is an illustration of the roles, not a requirement to buy a Raspberry Pi. If you want a dedicated small computer for a learning project, Raspberry Pi 5 is one option, but an existing computer can also demonstrate the underlying exchange.

Setup details depend on the device and operating system. Raspberry Pi’s current documentation covers boot media, networking, remote access, and Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless setups; older magazine instructions should not be treated as current installation guidance. For Raspberry Pi 5 specifically, the manufacturer recommends a 27 W USB-C supply, and its guidance for desktop Raspberry Pi OS recommends an SD card of at least 32 GB. Those are manufacturer recommendations for that hardware and setup, not requirements for learning how browsers and servers communicate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 404 error mean the whole website is offline?

No. A 404 response means the specific resource requested was not found; it does not by itself establish that every page or service on the site is unavailable.

Can one computer be both a browser client and a web server?

Yes. The same computer can run a browser that requests a page and server software that supplies one. The roles are determined by what each part does in that exchange.

Does HTTPS prove that a website is safe to trust?

No. HTTPS protects data in transit, but that protection alone is not a general assessment of a site’s honesty, accuracy, or safety.
