A bezel-free iPhone could make the front look more like one continuous screen, and an under-display front camera could hide the visible camera opening while you use the display. That would chiefly change the phone’s appearance and the display area within its body—not eliminate the need for cameras, authentication, speakers, microphones or sensors. It also would not, by itself, prove better camera quality, durability, battery life or value.
That distinction matters because Apple’s current iPhone 18 Pro and its announced iPhone Duo are different products from a hypothetical flat, bezel-free iPhone. The Duo is a foldable; its hidden camera is in the inner display. Apple has not established that it plans the same approach for a conventional slab phone.
What a bezel-free iPhone display would change—and what it would not
“Bezel-free” is best understood as a design goal: less visible framing around the display, possibly with a front camera concealed beneath it. It does not mean every millimeter of the front becomes usable screen, or that the phone’s other functions disappear.
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is a useful baseline for understanding the distinction. Apple calls its 6.3-inch OLED an “all-screen” display, yet its specifications also list a Dynamic Island and Face ID. The display’s diagonal is measured within a standard rectangle, so the rounded corners mean the actual viewable area is smaller than that rectangle suggests. “All-screen” therefore does not mean literally borderless. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications describe those features.

What could change in everyday use
A more continuous-looking front
Reducing the visible border can make the display appear to occupy more of the phone’s face. If a front camera is also placed beneath the display, its opening may not be visible when the camera is not in use. The result could look less interrupted, especially when viewing full-screen content.
Potentially more display area in the same body
A smaller border can increase the display-to-body ratio. But a larger panel does not guarantee that every video, app or webpage will show more useful content. Aspect ratio, rounded corners, app layout and on-screen controls all affect what fits and where it appears.

No automatic change to the phone’s core functions
The phone would still need front-facing camera capability, authentication, speakers, microphones and sensors. Those components might move or take a different form, but removing visible borders does not establish that they can all be removed. Apple’s current iPhone 18 Pro specifications list Face ID; its separate foldable example uses side-button Touch ID.
Why an under-display camera is an engineering trade-off
A camera behind a display must receive light through display layers that are also meant to show an image. Samsung Display describes the design challenge as allowing light to reach the camera while maintaining the display image and managing optical interference. Samsung engineers describe one concrete implementation in the Galaxy Z Fold4: the camera region uses reduced pixel density to let more light through. They also say diffraction can contribute to flare, saturation, blur and haze, with image-restoration algorithms used to address the resulting image. These are engineering considerations and descriptions of Samsung’s implementation—not test results for Apple hardware or a prediction of how a future iPhone camera would perform. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 UDC engineering interview provides those details.
Microsoft Applied Sciences likewise explains that a display can attenuate and diffract light reaching a camera behind it. Its project page reports 18% transmittance for one transparent OLED sample and 3% for one phone PenTile OLED sample. Those figures apply only to the two samples described; they do not characterize current iPhones, OLED panels generally or a future Apple device. Microsoft Applied Sciences’ under-display camera project page gives the sample-specific measurements.

What Apple’s iPhone Duo does—and does not—show
In its September 9, 2026 announcement, Apple described the iPhone Duo as a foldable with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says a FaceTime camera beneath the inner display stays hidden when not in use, and that Touch ID is integrated into the side button. These are Apple’s claims about the Duo, not evidence that a conventional iPhone will use the same design. Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement describes the product.
Apple also compared the Duo’s outer screen area with the iPhone 18 Pro, saying it is 90 percent of the Pro’s screen area. That is Apple’s named comparison for those two products; it is not a general measure of how much larger a bezel-free conventional iPhone’s display would be.

What remains unknown for a conventional bezel-free iPhone
The public product information cited here does not establish that Apple plans a flat iPhone with no visible bezel. It also does not establish a release date, manufacturing cost or yield, front-camera performance, durability, repairability or battery effect for such a hypothetical device. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the iPhone Duo or from under-display camera technology in other products.
Grip and touch behavior would depend on the specific design and software. Apple’s guidance about accidental edge or palm touches applies in the narrower context of problems that may occur with non-genuine replacement displays; it is not evidence that every phone with a smaller bezel will register unwanted touches.
