Crocodiles lived in ancient Egypt’s Nile environment and held an important place in its religion and burial practices. But “crocodile mummy” does not always mean Nile crocodile: genetic analysis identified mummies from three ancient Egyptian burial sites as Crocodylus suchus, a different species from the Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus.
Were crocodiles native to ancient Egypt?
Yes. The Egyptian Museum Cairo describes Nile crocodiles as very common in pharaonic times. Crocodiles were part of the river’s environment, where people could encounter a large and dangerous predator. The British Museum’s 2016 newsletter describes the Nile crocodile as an animal ancient Egyptians both feared and respected, noting that it inhabited riverbanks and marshes.
The Egyptian Museum’s artifact page calls its objects “Mummies of the big Nile crocodile.” That is useful evidence of how the museum presents the animals, but it is not a scientific identification of every crocodile mummy found in Egypt.
Were all ancient Egyptian crocodile mummies Nile crocodiles?
No. Genetic analyses of crocodile mummies from three ancient Egyptian burial sites identified the sampled animals as Crocodylus suchus, rather than Crocodylus niloticus. The Natural History Museum of Utah’s account of the findings cautions against assuming that every mummy labelled a Nile crocodile has been confirmed as that species.

Who was Sobek, and why was he linked to crocodiles?
Sobek was an Egyptian deity depicted either as a crocodile or as a human with a crocodile’s head. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities describes him as a major deity in the Fayum and Kom Ombo regions, with worship beginning in the Old Kingdom and continuing into the Greco-Roman period. The Metropolitan Museum of Art also places Sobek in a wider religious context, associating him with the Nile’s floods, fertility and Middle Kingdom royal power.

What do crocodile mummies and burials show?
Crocodile mummification and burial provide physical evidence of ritual practice. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities says some worshippers offered mummified crocodiles to Sobek, and that the form of an offering could depend on the worshipper’s wealth.

The crocodile cemetery at Shutb
At Shutb, near Kom Ombo, excavations uncovered a crocodile cemetery used from the beginning of the Middle Kingdom through the Greco-Roman period. The Ministry reports that nearly 80 crocodiles were found there; it does not state a publication year for that count.
Crocodiles on display at Kom Ombo
The Ministry says the Crocodile Museum beside Kom Ombo Temple opened in 2012 and displays crocodile mummies, coffins and related objects. It reports that the displayed mummies range from 2 metres for the smallest to 4.30 metres for the longest. Those measurements describe mummies in the museum, not living crocodiles.

Are crocodiles still found in Egypt today?
The Egyptian Museum Cairo says crocodiles are no longer present in the Nile River itself but still live in Lake Nasser. This is the museum’s summary of present distribution, not a population census; it does not give population counts or establish the full boundaries of crocodiles’ current range in Egypt.
