Use metadata when the target publishes a suitable preview image; render a screenshot when you need a visual fallback, a consistent design, or a view of content that has no usable image.
What is a link preview API?
A link preview API fetches a URL and returns data your application can place in its own card: title, description, image, domain, favicon and related metadata. OpenGraph.io describes these fields for its Link Preview API. The API supplies structured data; your website, app or chat interface still decides how the card looks.
What is link unfurling?
Link unfurling is the process of expanding a pasted URL into preview-ready information. A metadata endpoint reads Open Graph and Twitter Card tags, standard HTML values and page details such as redirects or canonical URLs. OpenGraph.io’s Site API documents a hybridGraph response that combines Open Graph, Twitter Card and HTML-inferred values, including fallbacks when a page does not declare every field.
Metadata versus a rendered thumbnail
| Approach | Input and result | Best use | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metadata unfurling | URL in, JSON containing title, description, image and page metadata out | Fast link cards that can use the publisher’s declared image | Missing, incorrect or unsuitable tags can leave the card without a useful image; dynamic content may require rendering |
| Screenshot rendering | URL in, a viewport or full-page image file or URL out | A visual fallback, consistent thumbnails, previews of pages with no suitable image, or a view of rendered content | Browser loading, JavaScript, blocked requests, layout changes, storage and provider-specific costs add operational complexity |
These are complementary rather than interchangeable. A practical system first tries metadata, then captures a screenshot only when the declared image is absent, unusable or not appropriate for your card design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should you render a screenshot?
Use the declared image when it is good enough
Prefer the page’s Open Graph or Twitter Card image when it has the right subject, dimensions and licensing for your product. Store the normalized URL and the metadata used to select it so you can diagnose incorrect cards later.
Fall back when metadata is incomplete
Render when there is no image, the image request fails, tags point to a tiny logo, or the page’s visual state is more informative than its editorial image. Rendering can also help when the useful content appears only after JavaScript executes, although success depends on the target page and the provider’s browser and retry behavior.

Keep platform behavior separate
Preview consumers do not all apply the same rules. Apple’s developer guidance describes Open Graph metadata for image-and-caption previews in Messages and references Twitter Card configuration in that context. Treat that as platform-specific guidance, not a universal requirement. Test cards on every platform where users share links and recheck each platform’s current documentation.
A scalable implementation flow
- Accept and validate the URL. Require an absolute HTTP(S) URL, normalize obvious formatting issues and record the submitted value separately from the final URL.
- Fetch preview metadata. Follow redirects according to your provider’s documented behavior, then collect title, description, image, domain, favicon, canonical URL and response status.
- Normalize and score fields. Resolve relative image URLs, remove unusable values, enforce your card’s text and image limits, and retain the source of each selected field (Open Graph, Twitter Card or inferred HTML).
- Decide whether the image is suitable. Check that it can be fetched and meets your minimum dimensions, format and aspect-ratio rules. If it passes, use it rather than rendering another image.
- Render only when needed. Select viewport or full-page mode, device dimensions, output format and a deterministic wait condition. Dynamic pages may need a selector wait, a delay or network-idle behavior.
- Store or cache the result. Keep an image under your own retention policy and record the source URL, capture time, redirect chain, status and failure reason. If a provider returns a temporary image URL, download it before expiry or confirm a persistent-storage option.
- Observe and repair. Track timeouts, HTTP errors, blocked pages, missing images, retries and cache hits. Quotas, concurrency, rate limits, proxy charges and retention terms must be checked against the provider’s current documentation.
Operational issues that matter at scale
JavaScript and retries
OpenGraph.io v3.0 documents automatic proxying, rendering and retry defaults. Its retry section says selected failures can be attempted again with escalating proxy tiers. That is the provider’s documented design, not evidence that every target will load successfully. Your queue should still cap attempts, apply timeouts and preserve a failure state.

Freshness and caching
Decide whether a preview may be served from cache and how it is invalidated. News and user-edited pages may need a short cache age; stable documentation can use a longer one. Record the cache age with the card so a refresh policy can be changed without losing provenance.
Image control and retention
Compare viewport dimensions, device presets, full-page support, selectors, output formats and quality controls. OpenGraph.io’s screenshot API search listing says its image URLs expire after 24 hours; if that remains true for the endpoint you choose, download or re-host the image when your cards must outlive that window.

User URLs add security, privacy and abuse concerns beyond ordinary page fetching. Before production launch, investigate how your fetcher validates URLs, controls what destinations it can reach, protects API credentials, applies per-user quotas and handles provider data.
