A website preview image generator creates the image people see when they share a page—or captures a page in a browser to use as that image. For a reliable social preview, create or capture the visual, publish it at a stable public URL, add Open Graph metadata to the page, and test the page URL in a preview checker. A 1200 × 630 pixel image is a widely used starting canvas, but check the platforms that matter to your audience because cards can crop or display images differently.

What a website preview image generator does

The phrase can mean two different things. A design generator helps you create a branded graphic for a shared link. A screenshot-based generator captures a web page or turns a supplied page URL into an image. Both can provide the image for a social card, but neither automatically guarantees that a platform will display the result: the page must expose suitable metadata, the image must be publicly reachable, and the platform must be able to fetch it.

A preview checker serves a different purpose. It fetches a page’s metadata and shows how the link may appear on supported services. For example, OpenGraph.io describes checking the preview image, title, description, Open Graph tags, Twitter/X cards, and simulated platform previews. OG Preview describes previews for Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, and other platforms. A checker helps diagnose the page; it does not replace the image or metadata.

Choose the right kind of generator

Need Approach What to plan for
One share image for a page or campaign Use a browser editor such as OpenPreview to design a graphic, then check the page with a preview tool. OpenPreview documents a 1200 × 630 canvas. Publish the finished image at a stable public URL and add it to the page metadata.
Consistent graphics across many pages Use a template workflow with page-specific titles, images, or other content. OpenGraph.io offers social preview templates for Open Graph images, LinkedIn banners, Twitter/X cards, thumbnails, and related formats. Ensure the template produces an image URL for each relevant page.
A browser screenshot as the preview image Use a screenshot-based service such as Image.Social or SocialPreview. Image.Social describes a dynamic preview URL based on a supplied site URL. SocialPreview describes automated screenshot-based images for pages across a site. Check whether a captured page is the visual you actually want to share.
Thousands of generated images or a large publishing catalog Combine templates and metadata generation with image infrastructure such as Imgix or Cloudinary. Automate page-to-image mapping, publishing, and validation. Kenodo names Imgix and Cloudinary for high-volume dynamic OG image generation.
Finding missing or weak previews across a site Run a site audit and then validate representative URLs. OpenGraph.io describes auditing metadata, image presence and quality, dimensions, reachability, and page-level visibility across multiple URLs.

For a designed card, favor a layout that communicates the page’s subject even when the image is displayed small. For a screenshot, capture a useful area rather than assuming a full-page image will make a legible card. Whichever approach you use, the image should match the page it represents.

Recommended image size and layout

Start with a 1200 × 630 pixel canvas. Kenodo states that its generator outputs a 1200 × 630 PNG and describes it as ready for Twitter Cards, LinkedIn, and Open Graph; OpenPreview also uses a 1200 × 630 editor canvas. Treat this as a practical starting size, not a promise that every platform will show the entire image at that ratio.

  • Keep the headline, logo, and other essential content toward the center rather than flush against the edges. Platforms may crop or render cards differently.
  • Use readable contrast and avoid making small text carry information that is essential to understanding the page.
  • Make sure the image relates to the page’s actual content. A generic graphic may be less useful than one that identifies the specific article, product, or announcement.
  • Validate the result on the platforms important to your audience. A single checker’s simulated preview cannot establish how every platform or context will render the card.

How to add a preview image to a page

Create or capture the image first and upload it to a stable, publicly reachable URL. Then add metadata in the page’s <head>. Use page-specific values rather than copying the same title, description, and image across unrelated pages.

  1. Create the visual. Design a card in an editor, render it from a template, or capture a suitable page image. The result should be an image file available to the page’s audience and to platform crawlers.
  2. Publish the image. Put it at a stable public URL that returns the image rather than a login page or an HTML viewer.
  3. Add Open Graph metadata. Include the page’s title, description, canonical page URL, content type, and image URL. Add a Twitter/X image tag as well if that is part of your implementation.
  4. Check the published page URL. Enter the page URL—not just the image URL—in a preview checker. Confirm that the checker can retrieve the metadata and image and that the simulated card looks appropriate.
  5. Fix the source and retest. If the checker shows an old or missing value, verify the live page’s head markup and image accessibility before changing the design. A preview tool can show what it fetched; it does not itself update your page.

A basic head section can look like this. Replace the example values with the correct information for the page and an image URL that is publicly accessible:

Generate page screenshots with ScreenshotNeo

If the intended preview is a capture of a live webpage rather than a custom-designed card, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF, from a single GET request. The service is made by Yorker Media. A captured page can be used as an image asset when that is appropriate for the page; you still need to publish a suitable image URL and set the page’s metadata.

Or skip the browser setup:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same endpoint can be called from Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Or from Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the sample target URL with the page you intend to capture and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. The same features are available on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to try 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Automate images for every page

For a small site, manually creating and checking a few images may be enough. For a larger catalog or publishing system, the difficult part is keeping each page’s title, description, image, and canonical URL in sync. A scalable workflow should give every page a predictable image output, store or serve that output at a stable URL, and include a way to identify pages with missing or unreachable images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Template generation: Define a reusable layout and populate it from page data. OpenGraph.io offers social preview templates, and Kenodo identifies Imgix and Cloudinary as options for generating dynamic OG images at scale.
  • Screenshot generation: Use a screenshot-based approach when the visual should represent a rendered page. SocialPreview lists integrations for WordPress, Shopify, Laravel, Next.js, Nuxt, Astro, Webflow, Wix, and Squarespace. The list identifies supported integration ecosystems, not a guarantee that every site configuration will work unchanged.
  • Metadata checks: Validate a sample from each page type and use an audit workflow to find absent or weak tags, missing images, dimension issues, and reachability problems. OpenGraph.io describes a multi-URL site audit for these checks.
  • Change management: When a page’s title or image changes, ensure the metadata and generated asset change together. Test the resulting public page URL after deployment.

Do not treat a successful image-generation request as proof that all social platforms will display the intended card. Generation, public delivery, page metadata, and platform rendering are separate stages.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect preview

The preview has no image

  • Check that the live page has an og:image value and that it points to the intended asset.
  • Open the image URL directly in a browser session where you are not logged in. Confirm it returns the image and is publicly reachable.
  • Use a preview checker on the page URL to see which metadata it fetched. OpenGraph.io describes checking image presence and reachability as part of its audit workflow.

The checker shows the wrong title, description, or image

Inspect the page’s published head markup and make sure the values describe that specific URL. Check for conflicting or stale values in the deployed page rather than editing the image alone. Retest the page URL after updating the source.

The image is cut off or hard to read

Rework the layout so its important text and logo sit in a safe central area, and make the message readable at small display sizes. The 1200 × 630 canvas is a starting point; validate on the platforms your audience uses because crops and card treatments can differ.

The preview is not a useful representation of the page

Decide whether the shared card should be a designed graphic or an actual page screenshot. A screenshot can include page elements that are poor card content, while a template can be more deliberate but requires accurate page data. Choose the output that communicates the page clearly, then check it as a link preview.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

For a one-off page, a browser editor and a preview checker are usually the simplest workflow. At higher volume, decide whether images should be rendered ahead of publication or generated dynamically, and consider how the system will handle unavailable pages, stale assets, and metadata changes. The available vendor descriptions establish specific advertised allowances, but they do not provide a common independent benchmark for generation speed, uptime, or output quality; compare services against your own pages and workload rather than assuming those properties.

  • Rotatable twist with 1/4"screw allows 360° adjustment and 180° flipping, so you can take photos, video call or live broadcast with ease

  • Swaps easily between handheld selfie stick and stand-alone tripod for dual-purpose use
  • Whether you're an amateur, enthusiast or professional, this is a must-have accesory for shooting on the go

Two allowances stated in vendor materials crawled in 2026 are worth distinguishing: SocialPreview advertises 50 captures per month free, while OpenGraph.io advertises 100 free monthly API requests for its Link Preview API. These are different products and units—captures versus API requests—and should not be treated as interchangeable capacity measures.

There is no established universal click-through-rate increase from adding generated preview images. A good image can make a shared link clearer and more recognizable, but avoid promising a particular engagement lift without evidence for the audience, platform, and page in question.
