A successful laptop demo proves that the browser and networks you tested found a working route. It does not prove that users on different networks can connect in production. Deployment adds separate things to get right: reachable signaling, viable ICE paths, and—when direct paths fail—a properly configured, reachable TURN relay. Camera and microphone access also have their own secure-context and permission requirements.

What changes when WebRTC leaves your laptop?

WebRTC media is commonly exchanged peer to peer, but the browser still needs help setting up the connection. Your application exchanges session descriptions and ICE candidates through a signaling service. ICE gathers and checks possible network paths. STUN can help a browser discover a server-reflexive address; TURN can relay traffic when a direct path cannot be established.

These are separate roles. A signaling server routes setup messages; it does not automatically carry the audio or video. A TURN server forwards media when selected as a relay. Putting the web application on a server does not, by itself, make either service available or put that server in the media path.

A laptop test covers only the route it exercised

Two devices on a familiar Wi-Fi network may be able to connect directly. Production users can be behind independent NATs, corporate firewalls, mobile carrier networks, or cloud network controls. Those conditions can change which ICE candidates work—or prevent a direct path altogether. A working call on one network is evidence for that tested route, not a compatibility guarantee for every user.

What the IETF requires—and what it does not say

RFC 8835, Transports for WebRTC, says: “In order to deal with situations where both parties are behind NATs of the type that perform endpoint-dependent mapping (as defined in [RFC5128], Section 2.4), TURN [RFC8656] MUST be supported.” This is a requirement to support TURN; it does not mean every call uses TURN. When ICE finds a suitable direct path, media can flow directly instead.

Which service does what?

Component or path Role What it does not solve
Signaling service Delivers session descriptions and ICE candidates between the intended peers. The application chooses its signaling transport, such as WebSocket or fetch. It does not repair a blocked media path or relay media unless the application is specifically designed to route media there.
STUN Helps a peer learn a server-reflexive address for ICE candidate gathering. It cannot guarantee that a direct route will work through every NAT or firewall.
Direct ICE path Carries media between peers when connectivity checks find a usable route. It is not available in every network pairing.
TURN relay Provides a relay address and forwards traffic when a direct path is unavailable. It must itself be reachable, correctly configured, and usable with the client’s network restrictions.

What commonly breaks in production?

Signaling reaches the wrong peer—or misses candidates

The signaling service must deliver each offer, answer, and trickled ICE candidate to the correct peer, using the ordering your application protocol requires. A call can fail before a usable connection forms if setup messages are missing or misrouted. Correct signaling alone, however, cannot make an unreachable TURN relay or blocked media route work.

There is no usable TURN path

STUN discovery is not a substitute for TURN. If a user’s network prevents direct connectivity, the browser needs a usable relay configuration. The WebRTC Project’s TURN guidance shows ICE server configuration with username and credential fields. Issue credentials according to the service’s authentication model; do not put long-lived secrets in public client code.

The relay is configured but unreachable

For self-hosted coturn, the listener and relay traffic have distinct network requirements. Configure its listening address and ports, relay range, and any public/private address mapping for the actual host topology. Then make the machine firewall, cloud or network firewall, and NAT rules agree with that configuration. The coturn documentation’s sample container command illustrates one setup; it is not a universal production firewall policy or a universal port range.

The client network blocks UDP

Some restrictive environments block UDP. RFC 8835 requires support for TURN over TCP and TLS over TCP for environments that block all UDP. These options can improve reachability, but the transport path has different performance characteristics, and changing a listener port alone does not guarantee a working call. Verify that the TURN service offers the needed transport and that the full path is allowed.

Media capture fails before ICE matters

Browser media capture is a separate gate. MDN documents that getUserMedia() requires a secure context and user permission. If the deployed page is not served in a secure context, or a user denies camera or microphone access, capture may fail before network connectivity is relevant. Fixing TURN does not resolve a browser permission or secure-context failure.

How should you debug a deployed call?

  1. Check capture first. Confirm that the deployed page is in a secure context and that the browser grants camera and microphone permission. If capture fails, resolve that before investigating ICE.
  2. Verify signaling. Confirm that each peer receives the correct offer, answer, and trickled ICE candidates through the signaling service, in the order expected by the application protocol.
  3. Inspect ICE at both ends. Review ICE gathering and the selected candidate-pair information for both peers. Candidate type helps distinguish host, server-reflexive, and relayed paths. Establish whether the call selected a direct route or TURN relay.
  4. Test TURN from outside its local network. Use valid credentials from a network outside the TURN server’s own subnet. Check that the configured listener and relay range align with the host firewall, cloud firewall, NAT mapping, and coturn settings.
  5. Check fallback transports where UDP is blocked. Confirm the TURN service offers TCP and TLS over TCP as needed, and verify that those paths are reachable from the client network.
  6. Compare conditions deliberately. Repeat the same call across relevant browsers, user networks, and deployment changes. A success on one Wi-Fi network demonstrates that route only.

Should you self-host TURN or use a cloud relay?

Option Trade-off Best fit when
Self-hosted coturn Gives you operational control, but you are responsible for listener and relay configuration, network reachability, firewall rules, and address mapping. You can operate and monitor the host and its network path.
Cloud-provided TURN A provider manages the relay service; you still need valid client configuration and working credentials, and the service must be reachable from users’ networks. You prefer a managed relay over maintaining your own TURN host.

The WebRTC Project describes both self-hosted and cloud-provided TURN options. No single price, capacity, or performance figure applies to every deployment: those depend on workload, hardware, network, and configuration.

How to interpret “it works on the same Wi-Fi but fails on different networks”

That symptom is consistent with a connectivity-path problem, including a case where TURN is needed but unavailable or unreachable. It is not enough to diagnose TURN by itself. Signaling delivery, selected ICE candidates, relay reachability, UDP restrictions, and capture permissions are distinct checks. The deciding evidence is what each peer gathered and which candidate pair the call selected—not whether the laptop demo once connected.
