The James Webb Space Telescope has identified candidates for a population of young brown dwarfs in NGC 602, a star-forming cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The discovery, announced by ESA/Webb on 23 October 2024, is significant because these are candidate brown dwarfs beyond the Milky Way—not objects the announcement says have all been individually confirmed.
What Webb found in NGC 602
An international team used the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to observe NGC 602 and identify what ESA/Webb described as the first rich population of brown-dwarf candidates outside our galaxy. The announcement uses the word “candidates”; it does not establish that every object has been spectroscopically confirmed. ESA/Webb’s announcement was published on 23 October 2024.
Where the cluster is—and why its environment matters
NGC 602 lies near the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy about 200,000 light-years from Earth. The cluster has a low abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. ESA/Webb describes this environment as a close analogue of conditions in the early Universe, making NGC 602 useful for studying how stars and related objects form in a setting unlike the Sun’s neighbourhood.
What makes an object a brown dwarf?
A brown dwarf is a free-floating substellar object: it is not gravitationally bound to a star as an exoplanet is, and it does not behave like an ordinary star. ESA/Webb gives a typical mass range of about 13 to 75 times Jupiter’s mass, while noting that some brown dwarfs can be lower mass. That range is a useful guide, not a single, uncontested dividing line.

Brown dwarfs can share traits with exoplanets, including aspects of their atmospheres and storm patterns. Their free-floating status and substellar nature distinguish them from planets orbiting a host star and from ordinary stars.
Why Webb could detect them so far away
Lead author Peter Zeidler of AURA/STScI for ESA credited Webb’s sensitivity and resolution at the relevant wavelengths for making the distant detection possible. In the ESA/Webb announcement, he said ground-based telescopes would remain unable to make such detections for the foreseeable future; that was his assessment at the time of publication.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The official announcement presents the objects as candidates. It does not provide the full technical selection method, individual-object confirmation evidence, detailed uncertainty estimates, or individual candidate masses. Those details should not be inferred from the announcement alone, and its claim should not be recast as confirmed identification of every object.
Elena Manjavacas said in the 2024 release, “Until now, we’ve known of about 3000 brown dwarfs, but they all live inside our own galaxy.” That is a dated figure attributed to her in the announcement, not a current census. The release also quotes Antonella Nota, then executive director of the International Space Science Institute and a previous Webb Project Scientist for ESA, saying the discovery highlights the power of using both Hubble and Webb to study young stellar clusters.
