In August 2019, Futurism reporter Dan Robitzski rode an Optimus Ride shuttle on the private streets of Brooklyn Navy Yard. It did drive itself along a mapped route and respond to a cyclist, but it was not an unmonitored taxi: two engineers rode up front, and a human driver took over for a three-point turn and parking. The ride showed a supervised autonomous shuttle in a controlled setting—not a vehicle proven ready for unrestricted New York City streets.
What happened on the Brooklyn Navy Yard ride?
Optimus Ride’s 2019 launch event took place on the Navy Yard’s private roads. Futurism described the debut as New York City’s first public autonomous vehicles, a characterization of that event—not proof that the city had never hosted an autonomous-vehicle test or demonstration before.
Four passengers rode in the shuttle, with two engineers in the front row. One watched the road; the other monitored a laptop showing what the vehicle was about to do. The route was mapped and the destinations programmed in advance.
Robitzski reported that the shuttle slowed and swerved around a cyclist while staying in its lane. He described the ride as shaky but said it felt safe to him. That account documents one launch-event trip; it is not a formal safety test or an independent assessment of the vehicle.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Did the shuttle actually drive itself?
Partly: it handled movement and a response to a cyclist on its mapped route, while human operators supervised it and intervened for maneuvers it did not perform during the ride. A human driver executed a three-point turn, guided from outside by another person, and later took the wheel to park. Engineers said human operators would remain onboard for the foreseeable future.
The distinction matters. A vehicle that can follow a prepared route and react to a road user has demonstrated some autonomous driving capability, but that does not establish that it can navigate every street, maneuver, or unexpected situation without help. The report contrasted the comparatively quiet, mapped private roads with ordinary New York City streets and highway edge cases.

What technology did Optimus Ride describe?
At the event, vice president of engineering Ruijie He said the shuttle combined visual recordings with LIDAR in one data stream to provide more detailed information about its surroundings. The reporter also described software displaying object recognition and changing confidence values. Those descriptions explain what the company presented; the article does not independently verify the system’s architecture, recognition accuracy, or safety performance.
What did company leaders say about the demonstration?
CEO Ryan Chin framed the event as a way to introduce the technology to the public: “What we’re doing is showing New Yorkers how autonomous vehicles will benefit their lives,” he said, “both at an economical level and a cultural level.”

Head of Product Stephanie Wu emphasized a gradual path to deployment: “It’s gonna be incremental,” she told the reporter. “There’s a lot of human complexity.” On the shuttle’s inability to complete a three-point turn at the event, Wu said: “There’s no fundamental reason we can’t do a three-point turn,” Wu explained, “We’re just not right now.”
How does this compare with autonomous-vehicle testing in NYC now?
The 2019 ride was a private-road demonstration, not evidence of permission to operate an autonomous shuttle freely on city streets. For current street testing, NYC DOT describes a city permit program, and New York State law requires an operator to be present and ready to take control while autonomous-vehicle technology is operating. The city’s March 2024 program announcement likewise described a trained safety driver behind the wheel and ready to take control.

Permit status and program details can change. The DOT permit page showed Waymo’s permit active through March 31, 2026 when reviewed; that date is a snapshot, not a statement of current status. Consult the NYC DOT autonomous-vehicle testing page for the latest requirements and permit information. The city also outlined the program in its March 2024 announcement.

- It showed: an Optimus Ride shuttle could travel on a mapped private route and, during this reported ride, respond to a cyclist while remaining in its lane.
- It also showed: engineers monitored the trip and a human driver took over for a three-point turn and parking.
- It did not establish: a quantified safety record, independent validation of the perception system, or readiness for unrestricted operation on NYC streets.
