Removing hosted CI did not remove this site’s checks. Mr Say Nothing says the project replaced two GitHub Actions workflows with a local pre-push script, while keeping deployment as a separate, explicit step. That trade trades permanent remote logs and a separate judging system for a smaller, simpler workflow. It is an account of one small site—not evidence that CI is unnecessary for most teams.
What changed when the hosted workflows were deleted?
Mr Say Nothing reports removing the site’s GitHub Actions workflows named verify and deploy, which together contained 118 lines of YAML, and replacing them with a 27-line shell script. The project’s pnpm ship command runs the existing verification chain before pushing. These details, like the rest of the operational account, are the author’s report rather than independently reproduced tests. Mr Say Nothing’s account
The checks named in that chain are TypeScript typechecking, a production build, 38 unit tests, a Playwright smoke pass, a leak-law grep over changed files, and a dead-code audit. The author says these gates stayed in place; what changed was where they ran and how they were recorded.

Deployment remains separate from verification. The described deploy process syncs the repository, builds the image, swaps the container, checks health, and inspects the live sitemap. So “the machine ships” does not mean every successful check automatically deploys the site.

Why did the author remove CI?
The stated trigger was not a belief that tests were pointless. It was a mismatch between what the green status appeared to guarantee and what happened to the live site. The author summarizes the preceding 30 days of CI as zero bugs caught and one incident missed—a self-reported account of this site, not a general measure of CI effectiveness.
In the author’s description, a September batch commit swept a gated post into the repository. CI built it, the sitemap listed it, and the post remained live for more than a day. A search-console diff exposed the problem. The author says checks were then added to enumerate commits and confirm that gated material is absent from the live sitemap. The incident and its timeline are reported by the author and were not independently corroborated in the material available.

The author’s conclusion is pointed: “A green checkmark is not a gate. It is a picture of a gate.” In this case, the reported CI run passed while gated content reached the public site. The lesson is the author’s interpretation of that incident, not proof that hosted CI generally fails to catch important defects.
What stayed the same—and what was lost?
The comparison is not simply “CI versus no checks.” In the reported setup, the verification gates remained, but moved from a hosted workflow to a local command. The operational guarantees around those checks changed:

The author also names a structural cost: the same machine and agent now write, check, ship, and serve the site. Hosted CI had provided separation between the code-writing agent and the process judging its work; the local arrangement removes that separation.
Who might this workflow fit?
Mr Say Nothing says the approach fits this project because it has one human, one agent, daily deploys, and low consequences if a deploy breaks. The author does not present that as a universal rule. They say the arrangement would not hold up for a team with several people pushing to one box: that would create a queue, and terminal-only logs would become inadequate.

For another project, the useful question is whether moving checks locally preserves the guarantees the team actually needs. Consider who must be able to see a failure, whether logs need to persist, how deployments are approved, and whether the machine running the checks can be unavailable without stopping delivery. The number of people alone does not answer those questions; the author’s boundary describes their own setup.

This account is not a recommendation to delete CI. It shows a narrower possibility: for a small, low-consequence site, a local command can run the same checks before a push while deployment remains a deliberate action. The costs are real—no permanent hosted logs, reduced separation between writing and checking, and builds tied to the serving machine. The reported gated-post incident also shows why a green status is not a substitute for a check that verifies the live outcome.
