What is WBO?
WBO is an online collaborative whiteboard for shared drawing. Its official site describes uses including art, entertainment, design, and teaching. The board can be a simple space for sketching or a place where people contribute to the same drawing together; the product information does not establish broader meeting, presentation, or classroom-management features.
WBO says a board is updated in real time for connected users and that its state is persisted. That describes the service’s stated behavior, not a guarantee about uptime, retention duration, or backup and recovery for every deployment. WBO’s product page
How do I share a WBO whiteboard?
- Open WBO and create or choose a board.
- Copy the board’s URL and send it to the people you want to draw with. WBO’s guidance is to share the URL to collaborate in real time.
- Participants open that URL in a browser; connected users can see board updates.
WBO also describes boards that can be reached by a custom name. Its public board is open to everyone. A private board is described as accessible to people who know its link or name; that should not be confused with named-user accounts, encryption, or a comprehensive permission system.

Public and private boards: what is the difference?

Choose the public board for open, informal drawing. For work that should not be publicly accessible, avoid the public board and consider what link-based access means for your group. If your requirements include identity checks or fine-grained permissions, the cited WBO information does not establish that those are built into the hosted board.
Can I self-host WBO?
Yes. The project repository documents running WBO on a web server or in a container, including a Docker image. Self-hosting means you operate the infrastructure and are responsible for its configuration, capacity, storage, and security choices. Consult the current WBO repository instructions for deployment steps and options; settings may change over time.

Storage and capacity settings
The repository identifies WBO_HISTORY_DIR as the board-history storage configuration and gives ./server-data/ as its default. Operators should understand where their deployment stores board history and plan backups and storage management accordingly.
WBO also documents a configurable maximum message count. Raising it may make drawing smoother, but the repository warns that doing so can increase denial-of-service exposure if server capacity is insufficient. The appropriate setting depends on the capacity and risk tolerance of the server; there is no universal value established here.

Optional authentication
The repository describes optional JWT authentication using AUTH_SECRET_KEY. It is an operator-configured option for self-hosted deployments, not evidence that every WBO board uses authentication by default. Follow the repository’s current setup guidance before exposing a deployment to users.
Is WBO right for your use?
- Consider it if you want a browser-based space where people can draw on the same board and URL sharing suits your group.
- Use the public board carefully if you do not want an open communal space; WBO describes that board as accessible to everyone.
- Consider self-hosting if you want to operate the service and make deployment choices for storage, network behavior, and optional authentication.
- Look for another fit if your project depends on managed user identities, detailed permissions, or richer facilitation and presentation tools; those capabilities are not established by the cited WBO materials.
Do you need special hardware?
No hardware purchase is established as a requirement. A pen graphics tablet may be useful if you draw extensively, but it is an optional input-device suggestion, not a verified compatibility recommendation for any specific model. Check the tablet, operating system, and browser requirements before buying.
