A Saitama University team reports making eight carbon quantum dot (CQD) variants from waste polyamide, with reported light emission spanning 308 nanometers in the ultraviolet to 552 nanometers in the yellow-green. The researchers changed the dots’ surface chemistry and defect-associated states while keeping the carbon precursor the same. The result is a laboratory demonstration—not a process proven for mixed plastics or ready for commercial use.
What the researchers made
Carbon quantum dots are tiny carbon-based materials whose optical properties can depend on their size, surface chemistry, and defects. In this study, the team used waste polyamide as the carbon source and prepared eight chemically distinct variants. The university research account, republished by Phys.org on October 5, 2026, describes dry pyrolysis and hydrothermal or solvothermal synthesis, followed by changes to surface chemistry, including oxidation and the introduction of boron-, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-containing groups.
That feedstock detail matters: “waste plastic” here means waste polyamide, not a demonstrated mixture of common plastics. The report does not establish that the same results apply to other polymer types or unsorted plastic waste.
How far the emission changed
The eight variants produced reported emission wavelengths from 308 nm, in the ultraviolet, to 552 nm, in the yellow-green. That is a 244 nm span across the reported set of samples. The reported effective optical transition energy fell from 4.32 eV to 2.50 eV as emission shifted toward longer wavelengths.

The report provides selected results, not a complete sample-by-sample data set for all eight variants.
Why changing surface chemistry can change the color
The researchers interpret the wavelength progression as a shift from emission associated more with the carbon core toward greater contributions from surface defects and heteroatom-associated emissive states. In practical terms, their approach is to alter the chemical groups and defect-related states around the dots, then compare how the resulting materials emit light.

The report also describes Dindex, a relative defect-state depth index, and DSEI, a defect-state engineering index that incorporates the Huang–Rhys factor. These are empirical descriptors for comparing the reported materials; they do not directly measure atomic-scale defect density or establish a specific defect structure.
What the results may—and may not—mean for applications
The reported optical range and quantum yields point to areas the researchers see as possible future uses, including optical sensing, luminescent coatings, displays, anticounterfeiting technologies, and other light-emitting devices. Those are prospective applications, not demonstrated products or validated deployments. The report identifies reproducibility, structural characterization, stability, and scale-up as challenges to resolve before practical use can be assessed.

Qingyue Wang’s five-to-ten-year horizon for advances in those areas is an attributed expectation, not a guaranteed schedule. Nor does the reported continuous shift across the eight variants mean that one sample changes color in real time: the account describes different variants made from the same precursor.

The work is reported as Christian Ebere Enyoh and colleagues’ “Defect state engineering in polyamide-derived carbon quantum dots enables continuous photoluminescence tuning,” published online in the Journal of Luminescence in 2026 (DOI: 10.1016/j.jlumin.2026.122187).
