WASP-193b is the exoplanet behind the “clown planet” and “cotton-candy planet” headlines. Its reported density is 0.059 grams per cubic centimeter—close to the 0.05 grams per cubic centimeter comparison used for cotton candy. That describes how diffuse the planet is, not what it is made of: WASP-193b is not a ball of sugar.
What is the “clown planet”?
WASP-193b is an exoplanet reported to lie about 1,200 light-years away. It is described as an extremely low-density super-Neptune: a world with a huge size relative to its mass. The nickname is a playful way to convey its unusual properties, not an official classification.
Why is its density compared with cotton candy?
Futurism reported a density of 0.059 grams per cubic centimeter for WASP-193b, compared with about 0.05 grams per cubic centimeter for cotton candy. The near match makes the planet’s low density easier to picture. Density is mass divided by volume; the comparison does not imply that the planet contains spun sugar or has cotton candy’s structure.
How large is WASP-193b?
The report describes WASP-193b as roughly 50 times the size of Neptune, despite having a remarkably low density. That size comparison should be read as a description of its enormous scale, not as evidence that it is solid or especially massive. The available figures here do not provide a separate radius and mass measurement, so a more precise size or mass comparison cannot be made from them.

What do scientists know—and what remains uncertain?
The discovery report was based on a paper that had not yet been peer reviewed. That makes the reported measurements an early research result rather than a settled explanation of how the planet acquired or maintains its diffuse state. The distinction matters: an unusual measured density does not by itself establish the mechanism behind it.
The report says WASP-193b may be as old as six billion years. That estimate complicates the common idea that super-puff planets are young objects whose extended atmospheres are temporary. It does not, on its own, resolve how WASP-193b can remain so diffuse.

Atmospheric observations also faced a limitation. University of Colorado researcher Jessica Libby-Roberts said: “This was completely unexpected. We had planned on observing large water absorption features, but they just weren’t there. We were clouded out!” The missing water absorption features mean those observations did not provide the expected view of the atmosphere; the quote does not establish the planet’s composition.

No. “Cotton-candy planet” is a density analogy, not a claim about literal ingredients. The nickname captures how unusually low the reported density is while leaving the planet’s actual composition and the explanation for its diffuse nature as scientific questions.
