Capcom considered making PRAGMATA more horror-focused, but producer Masachika Kawata said the team set that idea aside because horror seemed too close to Resident Evil for a new series. That was an explored direction—not evidence that the released game began as a fully formed horror title.
What was PRAGMATA’s horror origin?
In a September 2026 interview-based feature, producer Masachika Kawata recalled that the team considered one possible direction for PRAGMATA: “At one point, there was an idea to make something a little bit more horror focused.” The Ringer’s feature reports Kawata’s recollection; the wording is quoted there, not independently verified against an audio transcript.
Kawata said the team reconsidered the idea because the project was a new intellectual property and horror had substantial overlap with Resident Evil. As he put it: “Stepping back a little, this was going to be a new series, a new IP, and so horror, which seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil, didn’t seem like the most compelling use of the new title.”
Was PRAGMATA originally a horror game?
Not on the evidence available. Kawata described a horror-focused idea the team explored, not a finished original design or a formally announced horror game. The distinction matters: an early concept can shape a project without defining its original genre or the game that eventually ships.

Capcom’s public descriptions point to action-adventure instead. Its June 2020 announcement described the game as an action-adventure set in a near-future dystopian world on the moon. Capcom’s June 2025 description calls it a sci-fi action-adventure starring spacesuit-clad Hugh and android girl Diana.
What horror elements remain in the final game?
The Ringer reports that some horror-coded imagery remains, including lumbering, zombielike robots. That atmosphere does not make the finished game a horror title. The feature describes its combat as a hack-and-shoot system: Diana solves a Snake-like navigation puzzle to hack enemy defenses and expose a weak point, which Hugh can then attack.

How did the game change during development?
Lead producer Naoto Oyama told The Ringer that the 2020 reveal trailer showed a prototype. Hugh, Diana, and the lunar setting were already part of the project, but the eventual hack-and-shoot gameplay had not yet been conceived.
According to Oyama’s account in the interview, the team experimented with the game for roughly three years, from 2020 to 2023, then focused on refinement from 2023 through the game’s 2026 release. This is an interview-based account of the development timeline, not an independently confirmed studio production record.

How did the announced release plan change?
Capcom’s public schedule changed over time. The June 2020 announcement planned a 2022 release; its June 2025 announcement moved the public target to 2026. In December 2025, Capcom set April 24, 2026 as the release date and added Nintendo Switch 2 to the announced platforms. Those schedule changes do not, on their own, establish why the team moved away from the horror-focused idea.
