The broader process involved staff discussion, and character designer Rui Komatsuzaki described earlier concepts and later refinements.
What Kodaka meant by “five minutes”
In a 2017 interview with Gameblog, interviewer questions raised whether Kodaka had conceived Monokuma and another person simply drew the character from his instructions. Kodaka answered that the staff developed characters through substantial discussion and meetings. He then recalled that Monokuma came together in five minutes during one of those meetings.
That distinction matters: Kodaka was describing a sudden breakthrough in a meeting, not a stopwatch-timed illustration session. The interview does not establish how long it took to refine, draw, or finalize the design.
How the design reached the bear
Komatsuzaki’s first-person account on the original Danganronpa development blog fills in the design history. He identifies himself as the character designer and describes a process with discarded ideas as well as retained ones.

- Start with an anatomy-model concept. Because the story was set at a school, an anatomy model was considered for the mascot.
- Drop that concept. The team moved away from the anatomy-model idea as it shaped the game’s direction.
- Use the story’s black-and-white language. The team drew on “kuro” (black, associated with the culprit) and “shiro” (white, associated with everyone else).
- Add red and choose a bear. Red evoked Spike’s company color; the mascot became a bear, with small refinements made later, including adding a tail.
Komatsuzaki’s account gives context for Kodaka’s fast-idea anecdote: a central concept may have arrived quickly, but it sat within a broader creative process that included exploring and revising the design.
Why Monokuma is split between black and white
Kodaka explained in the Gameblog interview that the team wanted a character embodying both hope and despair, with a dual personality. The black-and-white contrast also connects to the story’s “kuro” and “shiro” terms. The two colors therefore serve both the visual design and the character’s opposing sides.

In a later Game Developer interview published March 13, 2015, Kodaka described Monokuma as beginning as a black-and-white character and becoming a way to express his own thoughts and opinions as he wrote. That is Kodaka’s account of the character’s role in his writing, not a separate production record.
Who created Monokuma?
The accounts point to collaboration rather than a single person doing every part. Kodaka described staff discussions and meetings; Komatsuzaki provided the character-design account; and Kodaka has described a back-and-forth in which he gave Komatsuzaki direction while visual ideas could prompt him to revise the scenario. PlayStation.Blog’s March 11, 2015 interview supports that collaborative description.
