What was the animal?
Microdocodon gracilis was a small docodont from the Jurassic, dated to about 165 million years ago. Nature described it in 2019 as the earliest mammal then known to have suckled milk. More cautiously, it is the earliest animal currently known from the relevant fossil evidence to have been able to suckle in a mammal-like way. Nature’s 2019 account discusses the fossil and the anatomical basis for that interpretation.
What evidence suggests it could suckle?
The important evidence is the hyoid apparatus: bones in the throat involved in coordinating swallowing, with supporting muscles. In living mammals, this apparatus helps make sucking and swallowing work together. Microdocodon preserves a hyoid form with mobile joints resembling the modern mammalian arrangement, which suggests it could use a similar mechanism.
The distinction is between an observed structure and an inferred behavior. The fossil preserves the throat anatomy; it does not preserve milk, mammary glands, or the act of nursing. The bones make mammal-like suckling plausible, but they do not directly document a particular feeding event.

Does “first” mean it was the first animal ever to nurse?
No. Here, “first” is shorthand for the oldest evidence currently known—not proof that no earlier animal suckled. Suckling itself is difficult to trace in fossils because a behavior does not necessarily leave hard anatomical evidence. A 2023 review of maternal-infant feeding evolution notes this difficulty in determining when suckling originated. The review discusses why the behavior’s beginnings are hard to establish from the fossil record alone.
New fossils or revised interpretations could change which animal holds the record. A careful description is therefore “earliest known evidence for mammal-like suckling,” rather than “the first animal ever to suckle milk.”

Was Microdocodon a mammal?
It was a docodont, a group commonly discussed among early mammaliaforms and close relatives of true mammals. Exactly which early fossil groups count as “true mammals,” and where the mammal family tree begins, remain matters of disagreement. Nature’s overview notes competing views about the dates of the oldest true mammals. That classification debate is another reason to keep the claim focused on the preserved suckling-related anatomy instead of treating the label “mammal” as settled.

Kayentatherium: evidence of young, not nursing
A 2018 study reported a clutch of Kayentatherium wellesi perinates alongside a presumed maternal skeleton. The authors described it as the first fossil record of pre- or near-hatching young of a non-mammalian synapsid. It provides evidence relevant to reproduction and parental investment along the mammalian stem, but it is not direct evidence of milk suckling.

Krusatodon: a way to study growth
A 2024 study of juvenile and adult specimens of the Middle Jurassic docodont Krusatodon used growth increments in dental cementum to investigate early mammaliaform life history. This kind of evidence can help researchers study growth and development, but it does not replace the specific hyoid-based interpretation for Microdocodon.
