There is no weekday that reliably guarantees the cheapest airfare. Google’s latest analysis, published October 5, 2026, found that U.S. domestic fares averaged their lowest 39 days before departure, while international fares averaged their lowest 89 days out. Those are historical averages, not a forecast for your route; for fixed dates, check the specific itinerary in Google Flights and compare the full trip and its booking conditions.
How far ahead should you book?
Google’s 2026 analysis uses five years of aggregated Google Flights data and focuses on departures from U.S. airports. It identifies average low points and ranges, not guaranteed sale dates. For domestic trips, its low-price range is 22–57 days before departure. For international trips, the average low is 89 days out, within a 50–133-day range; Google says the average price drop across that international range is insignificant and recommends booking as soon as possible. Google’s 2026 analysis
| Trip type | Average low | Low-price range | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. domestic | 39 days before departure | 22–57 days | A historical average for U.S. departures, not a promise for an individual route. |
| U.S. international | 89 days before departure | 50–133 days | The average difference across this range is insignificant; Google recommends booking as soon as possible. |
The 2026 article does not restate a full sample-construction method. Google’s 2025 methodology note describes round-trip fares observed from January 1, 2021, through August 1, 2025, for trips lasting 4–16 days from the top 4,000 U.S. markets, with separate samples for holidays and vacation periods. That earlier method should not be assumed to be identical to the 2026 analysis. Google’s 2025 methodology note

These category averages are useful for planning, but the fare for a particular city pair, date, and itinerary may behave differently.
Does the day you book matter?
Only slightly in Google’s analysis: Wednesday was the cheapest booking day and Sunday the most expensive, but the difference was about 1.4%. That small gap is not a strong reason to delay buying a suitable fare until Wednesday. The day you fly may have a larger association with price: departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday was linked to about 14% savings compared with weekend flights. For domestic trips, the difference reached up to 20% when compared with departing and returning Sunday. These are reported averages, not guaranteed savings for a particular itinerary. How to use Google Flights for your dates
- Enter your route and dates. Search the origin, destination, departure date, and return date you are considering.
- Check the itinerary-specific booking insight. Google Flights may show a “cheapest time to book” insight comparing current prices with prior years and indicating whether prices are likely to rise or fall. Treat it as guidance rather than certainty: Google says its predictions are based on historical trends and future prices may not follow them. Google Travel Help: How to find the best fares with Google Flights
- Compare nearby travel dates if you can. Use the date grid or price graph to inspect nearby departures and returns. Flexibility on travel days may matter more than choosing a particular weekday to purchase.
- Compare the full itinerary, not just the first price shown. The “Best” tab weighs price, convenience, duration, stops, and airport changes. The “Cheapest” tab prioritizes low price and may include trade-offs such as self-transferring luggage or changing airports. Google Travel Help
- Review the seller and conditions before booking. Compare the total price, stops, duration, airport changes, any self-transfer, the airline or online travel agency selling the ticket, and the ticket’s booking conditions. Google says it compares offers from more than 300 airline, OTA, and aggregator partners, but results may not include every available offer. Google Travel Help
When is a connection worth considering?
Google reported that nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average than connecting flights. A connection can lower the fare, but weigh the savings against added travel time and the possibility of an airport change or self-transfer. Compare the actual itineraries and conditions rather than assuming every connecting flight is a better deal.

Use the national booking windows as context, then make the decision around your specific route and fare. Google’s Group Product Manager for Search, James Byers, wrote: “When your dates are already set, booking early is the safest bet to protect your itinerary.” Google’s price insight can help you judge whether a current fare looks unusual against past prices, but it cannot guarantee what a fare will do next. If a suitable itinerary is available at a price and under conditions you accept, waiting for a particular booking weekday offers little support from Google’s reported 1.4% difference.
