Choose VS Code if you want an integrated workbench for coding, Git, debugging, testing, and extensions. Try Sublime Text if its multiple-selection editing, tab multi-select, and command-line workflow better match how you work—and note that continued use requires a license after the free evaluation.
How do VS Code and Sublime Text differ?
The central difference is the workflow each editor emphasizes. VS Code documents a broad development workbench: editing, language-aware assistance, a terminal, running and debugging, testing, Git, and extensions. Sublime Text’s official materials highlight focused editing features such as multiple selections and tab multi-select, along with packages and a command-line tool. Neither set of priorities proves that one editor is universally better or faster.
Language-specific capabilities in VS Code depend on built-in support and extensions; additional components are common for particular workflows. See VS Code documentation and its extension Marketplace documentation.
Which editor is better for Git?
VS Code
VS Code documents graphical workflows for staging and committing changes, branching, worktrees, and resolving merge conflicts. Its Git interface is built in, but Git itself must be installed separately on the machine. The editor uses that installation for Git operations; installing GitHub Desktop alone does not meet this prerequisite. Details are in the VS Code source control documentation.

Sublime Text
Sublime Text lists Git integration on its official product page, but the available documentation here does not establish feature-by-feature parity with VS Code’s documented Git interface. If a particular GUI operation is essential, check whether Sublime Text’s current workflow supports it before switching. See Sublime Text’s official product page.
How do extensions and packages compare?
Both editors can be customized, but their extension systems are distinct. VS Code uses Marketplace extensions to add languages, debuggers, and tools. The Marketplace page describes thousands of extensions; that is not a dated count, so treat it as a general description rather than a current inventory figure. Consult the Marketplace documentation to explore available extensions.

Sublime Text uses packages, which can include plugins, syntax definitions, menus, and snippets. The package documentation also explains package contents and locations. Sublime Text’s multiple-selection tools let you edit several locations at once, add occurrences to a selection, or split a selection into lines. Its tab multi-select offers another way to work with groups of open files. These features may suit repetitive changes across a file or a workflow centered on direct text editing. What should you check before installing?
Check the current official compatibility information against both your operating system and processor architecture, especially on ARM devices. Sublime Text’s compatibility page lists Windows, Mac, and Linux, including Apple Silicon for Mac and ARM64 for Linux; it says Windows ARM is not currently supported. Compatibility can change, so verify the current platform support before installation.

VS Code says its core features do not require an account. Sublime Text 4 is listed on its official download page, which says it may be evaluated for free but requires a license for continued use. Since builds and license terms may change, check the current download and license information before deciding.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose VS Code if you want a documented integrated workbench, a built-in Git interface, and a broad extension ecosystem. Plan to install Git separately and add language- or platform-specific components as your work requires.
- Try Sublime Text if multiple-selection editing, tab multi-select, command-line integration, and package-based customization are central to your preferences. Evaluate it first, then account for the license required for continued use.
This is a feature-based choice, not a performance verdict: no independent speed testing is established here, and your preferred workflow matters more than a universal ranking.
