When VS Code skips a breakpoint, the debugger may not be able to bind it to executable code—or the active session may be running a different process or generated file than the one you’re watching. Start with the breakpoint icon, then check the line, debugger, session target and, for compiled code, source maps.
What the breakpoint icon tells you
A breakpoint is a request to pause when the running program reaches a location the active debugger can recognize. In VS Code, a filled red circle indicates an enabled breakpoint. A filled gray circle indicates a disabled one. A hollow gray circle means the debugger could not register the breakpoint; the line may not contain executable code, or the debugger may not support that source file. See VS Code’s debugging guide.
Icons are clues, not a complete diagnosis: their meaning and behavior can vary by debugger and language. If the breakpoint looks enabled but execution passes it, continue through the checks below.
Check that the line can execute
Move the breakpoint to a statement that the program actually runs. Blank lines, declarations and some positions inside multiline statements may not correspond to a runtime instruction. A breakpoint on code in a branch that never runs will not pause, even if it is registered.

Python’s debugger validates whether a selected line is executable and may move the breakpoint to a nearby valid line. If a breakpoint appears to shift, check where it landed and whether that code path runs. See the Python debugging guide.
Confirm the right debugger and process
Use a debugger that supports the language
VS Code includes debugging support for JavaScript, TypeScript and Node.js. Other runtimes require the appropriate debugger extension, installed and enabled. If the active debugger cannot handle the file, it cannot bind the breakpoint there. The general debugging guide explains VS Code’s debugger model.

Make sure the session runs the code you are watching
A launch configuration starts a program under the debugger. An attach configuration connects to an already-running process in debug mode. If the wrong program starts, or the debugger attaches to a different process, the line in your editor may never be reached by that session.
Open the Run and Debug view, check the selected configuration, and inspect the workspace’s .vscode/launch.json when the setup needs a particular entry point, working directory, arguments, environment variables, pre-launch task or attach target. For TypeScript or browser JavaScript, check source maps
When you debug authored TypeScript or bundled browser code, the program may execute generated JavaScript rather than the source file shown in the editor. Source maps connect those generated files to the authored lines. If the maps are absent, stale or inaccessible—or the debugger cannot find the generated files—the breakpoint may not correspond to the executing code.
TypeScript and Node.js
Confirm that source maps are enabled in the TypeScript build, rebuild after changing the setting, and check that the debugger’s outFiles setting covers the emitted JavaScript. The TypeScript guide describes the configuration symptom “Cannot launch program because corresponding JavaScript cannot be found”; that specific message points to a generated-file discovery problem, not every skipped breakpoint. Browser JavaScript
Check the Debug Console for source-map loading errors and verify that the map’s URL or path is reachable by the debugger. Browser debugging depends on the generated code and its map being available to the debugging session. See Browser debugging in VS Code.

- Make sure the Python Debugger extension is installed and enabled.
- Confirm that VS Code has selected the interpreter for the environment you intend to run.
- In
.vscode/launch.json, use the currentdebugpyconfiguration type rather than the deprecatedpythontype. - If the session still misbehaves, remove invalid Watch expressions and try again.
