On Meta Quest, the feature is called Boundary in newer guidance and Guardian in older materials; “Chaperone” is often used for SteamVR’s boundary, whose specific controls are not covered here. A boundary can help you notice when you are nearing the edge of your play area, but it cannot stop you or guarantee that hazards have been found.
What does a VR boundary do?
Meta’s system has you map an unobstructed area on the floor by drawing an outer perimeter. It then derives a rectangular play area inside that perimeter. As your head or controllers approach the play area’s edge, a translucent grid appears; the passthrough view may also fade in so you can see more of the real room. Meta’s boundary documentation describes this behavior.
The drawn perimeter and the system’s rectangular play area are related, but they are not the same thing. Configure the boundary around space you can actually use, rather than extending it through walls, furniture, or other unavailable areas.
How to prepare and set up a safe play area
Consumer menu labels and setup steps can vary by headset and software version. Follow the on-device prompts and the current official support instructions for your model rather than relying on a setup sequence written for an older headset.
#1 Best Overall
- PLAY ON THE MAT: The large 35 inch size allows you to play with both feet on the mat. Why step on and off the mat when you can stay within your improved Safety Zone. US Patent #10,350,488
- MINIMIZES ACCIDENTS: Improves VR game play by defining your play area and keeping you within a zone away from objects or walls. Using a tactile approach for your feet provides an extra level of safety and keeps you far enough from your guardian systems warnings and allows you to focus on your game and not the flashing boundary.
- KEEPS YOU CENTERED: Physical home centering button along with smaller north facing button provides a true physical presence while in Virtual Reality. Keeping you centered is key to great gaming.
- USE ALMOST ANYWHERE: At home, school, hotels, dorm rooms, VR arcades- any use that requires standing or room scale.
- USE WITH ALL VR SYSTEMS: Not limited to any one VR system! Provides all Virtual reality systems (with standing & room scale movement games) the benefit of centering, room awareness, direction, increased safety for longer & better game play.
- Clear the space. Remove floor-level clutter and other obstacles from the area where you will move. Avoid uneven surfaces such as stairs and ramps. Meta’s safety guidance advises users to prepare a safe play area.
- Choose the mode that matches your activity. Stationary mode suits compact seated or standing use with limited movement. Roomscale is for moving within a traced area, provided you have enough genuinely clear space and the experience supports that setup. Meta’s boundary guidance explains these modes.
- Trace only usable floor space. Follow the headset’s prompts to map the clear area. Keep the configured play area conservative enough for your movement and arm swings; Meta’s cited guidance does not specify a universal buffer distance.
- Keep play inside the boundary. Treat the grid or a fading passthrough view as a cue to stop, reorient, and return to the cleared area. Experiences should keep interactions inside the selected play area, especially close interactions near its edge. Meta’s app design guidance recommends supporting stationary and roomscale configurations and keeping required interactions within the user’s selected setup.
How much space do you need for room-scale VR?
Meta publishes two related but distinct recommendations. Neither should be read as a universal safety standard or as a guaranteed minimum for every headset or experience.
| Meta guidance | Published space recommendation | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon OS Developers design guidance (undated page reviewed October 4, 2026) | 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft (2 m × 2 m) or larger | Recommended roomscale play area. |
| Horizon OS Developers boundary integration guidance (updated September 10, 2026) | 9 ft × 9 ft total space, with a 6 ft × 6 ft playable area free of obstructions | A larger overall space that contains a clear playable area. |
Use the recommendation relevant to what you are measuring: one page describes a recommended play-area size, while the other distinguishes the total space from the unobstructed playable area. The experience’s movement requirements and the room’s actual obstacles also matter.

What happens when you approach or cross the boundary?
As your head or controllers near the configured play area, the grid warning appears and passthrough may fade in. These are prompts to stop and return to the cleared area—not permission to continue moving beyond it. A boundary is software, not a physical barrier, and it cannot prevent a collision or detect every hazard.
Does passthrough replace the VR boundary?
No. Meta’s developer guidance states: “Importantly, however, neither scene nor passthrough is a substitute for the safety mechanisms provided by the boundary.” (Meta Horizon OS Developers, “Passthrough,” updated July 25, 2025.) Scene understanding and passthrough do not guarantee that every object in the activity space will be identified. Boundaryless experiences may also provide no warning when you leave the room. Keep the boundary configured and clear hazards yourself before play. See Meta’s safety guidance and boundary documentation.

Choose stationary or roomscale play
- Choose stationary when you will sit or stand in a compact area and the experience does not require moving around.
- Choose roomscale when the experience calls for movement and you can trace an unobstructed area large enough to contain it.
- Reconsider the setup if the experience requires interactions outside your selected configuration or near the edge of the playable area.
Meta’s design guidance recommends that apps accommodate both stationary and roomscale setups rather than requiring users to interact beyond their chosen play area.
