For protecting your IP address while also encrypting traffic routed through an intermediary, a VPN is usually the better choice. A proxy can also make a destination see the proxy’s IP address, but it commonly covers only the app configured to use it and does not inherently encrypt the connection from your device to the proxy. Neither option makes you anonymous.
What changes when you use a VPN or proxy?
A website normally sees the public IP address from which its request arrives. With a forward proxy, a configured app sends its request through the proxy, so the destination sees the proxy’s address rather than the user’s. Traffic that is not configured to use the proxy may still connect directly. With a VPN, traffic routed through the VPN tunnel reaches destinations from the VPN endpoint, which is the address those destinations generally see. The exact coverage depends on the VPN app, device, and routing configuration. Kaspersky’s comparison and AWS’s technical comparison describe these common arrangements.
So, does a proxy hide your IP address? It can hide your device’s address from a destination for requests that actually pass through that proxy. Does a VPN hide your IP? It can show the VPN endpoint’s address to destinations for traffic routed through its tunnel. In either case, the claim applies to the relevant routed traffic—not automatically to every connection from every app on the device.
VPN vs. proxy: the practical differences
| What matters | VPN | Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Address a destination sees | The VPN endpoint’s IP address for traffic routed through the VPN | The proxy’s IP address for requests routed through it |
| Encryption | Encrypts traffic carried through the VPN tunnel between the device and VPN endpoint | Does not inherently encrypt the device-to-proxy connection; separate protections may apply |
| Typical scope | Often covers device traffic through a consumer app, subject to configuration | Often covers only a configured browser or app, subject to proxy type and setup |
| Who you trust | The VPN operator handles tunneled traffic and can see connection metadata; HTTPS still protects website content in transit between browser and site | The proxy operator handles relayed requests and may see data not protected by HTTPS |
| Best fit | Encrypting routed traffic on an untrusted access network or routing traffic from multiple apps | Changing the apparent source address for one configured app or task when broad device coverage is unnecessary |
These are typical consumer configurations, not rules for every implementation. Proxy types differ, and a proxy connection can be combined with TLS or other protections. VPN services also differ in protocols, routing, and DNS behavior.

Encryption is not the same as IP masking
A VPN’s tunnel encrypts the traffic carried between your device and the VPN endpoint. This can help protect that leg from observers on the local network, but it shifts trust: the VPN operator becomes the intermediary handling the tunneled traffic. A proxy also becomes an intermediary for the requests sent through it, but a proxy alone does not guarantee encryption on the device-to-proxy leg.
HTTPS has a separate job: it protects the browser-to-website connection. Keep HTTPS enabled whether you use a VPN or proxy. VPN encryption does not replace HTTPS; HTTPS also helps protect website data from the intermediary, while not concealing all connection information or preventing the destination from identifying you.

Neither option makes you anonymous
Changing the IP address a site sees removes or changes one identifying signal, not all of them. A site can still associate activity with an account when you sign in, or use cookies and other identifiers to recognize or link sessions. A VPN or proxy also cannot guarantee that a destination will accept its address; services may block VPN or proxy IPs.
Read the provider’s privacy terms and look for verifiable information rather than relying on broad promises. The intermediary is a party you must trust: a VPN shifts visibility of tunneled traffic away from the local network or internet provider and to the VPN operator, while a proxy operator handles the traffic routed through it. HTTPS limits what either intermediary can read about protected website content, but does not eliminate that trust relationship.

Choose based on what you need to protect
Choose a VPN for an encrypted tunnel across routed traffic
A reputable VPN is generally the better fit when you want traffic routed through an encrypted tunnel, including while using an untrusted local network. Check which device traffic the app actually routes and review the provider’s privacy and security information. Continue using HTTPS, and remember that the VPN provider becomes a trust point.
Choose a proxy for a narrower app-level route
A proxy can make sense when you need one configured app or task to connect through another address and do not need broad device coverage or an encrypted device-to-proxy connection from the proxy itself. HTTPS may protect the website leg, but it does not automatically secure the path between your device and the proxy.

Consider a VPN-capable router for devices without VPN apps
A compatible router can run a VPN client so supported devices on the home network—such as some smart TVs—can use the VPN without installing VPN software on each device. This is optional, not a requirement for choosing between a VPN and proxy. Compatibility depends on the router model, firmware, and VPN provider’s connection type; consult the router manufacturer’s instructions, such as ASUS’s VPN-client setup guidance.

Residential proxies route requests through devices with consumer ISP-assigned IP addresses, making requests appear to come from those addresses. In a March 12, 2026 public service announcement, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warned that devices can be enrolled in residential proxy networks with or without their owners’ awareness. It cited routes including SDK partnerships, malware, and hidden terms in some free VPN services. The warning is not a claim that every free VPN or proxy does this.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Be cautious about free VPN applications and read their terms before installing.
- Use official, trusted app stores and avoid pirated software.
- Do not assume an app is safe simply because it offers IP masking; understand what access and permissions it requests.
The FBI/IC3 advisory discusses residential proxy networks specifically; it does not establish that ordinary proxies or all VPN services enroll users’ devices.
One terminology distinction: forward and reverse proxies
This comparison is about a forward proxy used by a person’s device to send requests to destinations. A reverse proxy instead sits in front of application servers, where a website or service may use it to manage incoming requests. They are both called proxies, but a reverse proxy is not a consumer alternative for hiding a visitor’s IP address.
Specialized privacy designs also exist. The FTC describes “oblivious proxies,” which can divide information between entities so one service need not learn who made a request. The FTC notes that implementation and auditing challenges can undermine privacy, so this design should not be treated as representative of ordinary commercial proxies. The FTC’s February 2024 article discusses those privacy-enhancing technologies and related consumer-protection concerns.
Verdict
For most people who want both a different IP address at destinations and encryption for traffic routed through the intermediary, a VPN is the more complete fit. Use a proxy when the need is specifically to route one configured app or task through another address. Either way, understand what traffic is covered, keep HTTPS enabled, and choose an intermediary whose practices you are willing to trust.
