Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your VPN will not connect, first disconnect it and check whether the internet works normally. If it does, work through these eight checks in order: retry, switch VPN server, try another supported protocol or network, look for software conflicts, restart, and then contact the VPN provider or network administrator. The right fix depends on whether the problem affects one server, one network, or a managed work or school connection.
1. Check that your internet works without the VPN
Disconnect the VPN and try loading a website or using an online app. If nothing connects, fix the underlying Wi-Fi, cellular, or router problem first; a VPN cannot establish a tunnel without working internet access. Avast and Bitdefender both recommend checking connectivity with the VPN off.
2. Retry in case the failure is temporary
If the VPN worked on this device and network before, wait briefly and try again. A temporary network issue can leave an app stuck at “Connecting,” according to Norton’s troubleshooting guidance. If it fails repeatedly, continue rather than assuming the service will recover on its own.
3. Switch to a different VPN server or location
Choose another location in your VPN app and retry. If the new location works, the issue may be specific to the original server or route. If every location fails, focus next on protocol, network restrictions, and device settings. Avast and PrivadoVPN include changing the server or location among their connection checks.

4. Try another protocol supported by your VPN
Some VPN apps let you select a connection protocol. If yours does, try a different option using the provider’s instructions; names and settings vary by provider and platform, and an option available on one device may not exist on another.
Apple documents VPN configurations including IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN through an appropriate client app, but the available methods depend on the device’s operating-system version and the profile or app configuration. Use the documentation for your actual VPN rather than selecting a protocol based on a generic recommendation.

5. Test a different permitted network
Public Wi-Fi at hotels, schools, or offices—and some company networks—may restrict VPN traffic. If possible, try a different trusted connection or cellular data. If the VPN works there, the original network may be blocking or limiting it. Ask the network administrator about restrictions; do not try to bypass or change a managed firewall yourself.
6. Check for other VPNs and security-setting conflicts
Disconnect any other VPN service and check whether firewall, antivirus, proxy, VPN-profile, or network-filter settings could be interfering. Change or disable security software only when you understand the effect and can restore the original setting; do not leave protections off as a workaround.
On Apple devices, Apple recommends checking for VPN and other third-party security software or settings that can affect connectivity. On an organization-managed device, ask the organization’s administrator before changing profiles, filters, or security settings.
7. Restart before considering a network reset
Restart the device
Close and reopen the VPN app, then restart the device and try again. This is a simpler first step than changing network configuration.

Reserve network resets for persistent problems
If an Apple device still has connectivity problems, Apple describes resetting network settings on iPhone or iPad, or creating a new network location on Mac, as further troubleshooting options. These actions can change network configuration, so use Apple’s device-specific instructions and consider them only after the checks above.
8. Escalate with the error details
Contact the VPN provider for an app or account-specific failure. For a work, school, or otherwise managed VPN, contact the organization’s network administrator. Share the exact error message or code, the device and operating system, whether the internet works with the VPN off, and whether another server or network changes the result. Provide connection logs only if the provider or administrator requests them.

Windows work VPNs: when an administrator needs to investigate
Microsoft’s Always On VPN troubleshooting guidance applies to managed Windows deployments; it is not a universal repair guide for consumer VPN apps. In relevant IKEv2/IPsec configurations, an administrator may need to verify the tunnel type and required client and server certificates. Microsoft notes that UDP ports 500 and 4500 may need to be allowed for IKE/IPsec.
For Windows VPN Error 809, Microsoft says an intervening firewall, NAT device, or router may be blocking the connection. The administrator or service provider should identify the responsible device and correct its configuration. Authentication mismatches such as Error 812 also require administrator attention. These checks are for the people who manage the VPN infrastructure, not instructions to alter a work network yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the pattern of failures to choose your next check
- The internet fails with the VPN off: troubleshoot the Wi-Fi, cellular connection, or router.
- One server fails but another connects: keep using a working location and report the failing one to your VPN provider if needed.
- The VPN works on another network: ask the original network’s administrator whether VPN traffic is restricted.
- Only a managed work or school VPN fails: give the administrator the error code and ask them to check configuration, certificates, or network rules as appropriate.
- Several VPN or security tools are installed: check for conflicts before changing network settings.
These outcomes help narrow down the cause; they do not establish one protocol, server, or VPN provider as the best choice for every device and network.
