Yes: Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks powered by Aurora’s self-driving system are hauling freight on a Dallas–Oklahoma City route. The service Volvo announced in May 2026 runs five days a week under supervision, so it is not yet fully driverless. Volvo and Aurora have said they plan to begin driverless VNL operations in Q1 2027, but that is a target, not a guaranteed launch date.
Where Volvo’s autonomous trucks are operating
Volvo Autonomous Solutions said in May 2026 that its Dallas–Oklahoma City route covers 200 miles and carries freight to customer facilities in Oklahoma City five days per week. Volvo describes the service as end-to-end: the trucks reach customer endpoints directly, reducing drayage moves and handoffs.
The announced route is a supervised-autonomy operation. The available announcement does not specify the exact supervision arrangements, such as the number or location of safety personnel, so the service should not be described as driverless.

The distinction is between what is operating and what Volvo and Aurora say they intend to do next. Their plans depend on validation, vehicle production and regulatory execution.

What the Volvo VNL Autonomous and Aurora Driver do
The Volvo VNL Autonomous is a truck designed specifically for autonomous operation. Volvo unveiled the production-ready vehicle at ACT Expo in May 2024. Its safety-critical systems—including steering, braking, communications, computing, power management, energy storage and vehicle-motion management—have duplicated components, according to Volvo. The intent is to provide a backup if a critical component fails.
Aurora Driver is the autonomous driving system integrated into the truck. Aurora describes it as an SAE Level 4 system and says it uses dual computers, proprietary lidar, high-resolution cameras, imaging radar and additional sensors. Volvo said in 2024 that the truck’s lidar could detect objects more than 400 meters away. That is Volvo’s stated sensor capability, not a guarantee that the truck can identify or safely respond to every hazard at that distance.

The partnership combines Volvo’s truck engineering and manufacturing with Aurora’s “virtual driver” technology. As Sasko Cuklev, Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ Head of On-Road Solutions, put it, the VNL Autonomous and Aurora Driver form an integrated solution for hub-to-hub freight. Integration is central to the design: the autonomous system is paired with a truck built around redundant controls rather than added as a standalone feature.
Manufacturing plans and the route to a larger fleet
Volvo says the autonomous VNL will be assembled at its New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia. In the May 2026 route announcement, Volvo said line-side integration of Aurora Driver had begun at the plant and that it planned to build hundreds of autonomous VNL trucks in 2027. Aurora’s separate Q2 2026 letter put a more specific figure on its expectation for driverless operations: more than 300 trucks by the end of that year.

Those statements describe planned production and fleet growth, not completed output. The announcements do not establish how many trucks had been built, or how many were operating driverlessly, at the time they were made.

The companies have published several figures, but they refer to different kinds of miles and different reporting periods; they should not be treated as one continuous or directly comparable measure.

- Nearly 440,000 driverless miles: Aurora reported this cumulative total through June 2026 in its Q2 2026 shareholder letter. Aurora also reported 100% on-time performance and zero collisions attributed to Aurora Driver. These are company-reported results; the letter’s figures should not be read as an independently verified guarantee of future performance or as a claim that no collision of any kind occurred.
The testing mileage reported in 2024 and the driverless mileage reported through June 2026 have different descriptions and dates. The announcements do not provide a common measurement basis for comparing them.
