For nationwide 5G area coverage, Telekom is the strongest starting point—but it is not automatically the best network at your home, workplace, or usual routes. The Bundesnetzagentur’s October 2025 comparison put Telekom at about 87% of Germany’s area for 5G, compared with about 75% for Vodafone and 76% for Telefónica (O2). A later comparison published by Telekom reports 89.1%, 75.7%, and 76.2%, respectively, using regulator data through December 2025. Check the same important locations on the official coverage map, then consider a local test SIM before switching.
How do Telekom, Vodafone, and O2 compare on coverage?
The clearest nationwide operator-by-operator comparison in the Bundesnetzagentur’s December 2025 release covers 5G area coverage as of October 2025. Telekom led, with Vodafone and Telefónica (O2) close to one another:
| Network | 5G area coverage | Source and data date |
|---|---|---|
| Telekom | About 87% | Bundesnetzagentur comparison; coverage as of October 2025 |
| Vodafone | About 75% | Bundesnetzagentur comparison; coverage as of October 2025 |
| Telefónica (O2) | About 76% | Bundesnetzagentur comparison; coverage as of October 2025 |
Telekom later published more precise figures: 89.1% for Telekom, 75.7% for Vodafone, and 76.2% for Telefónica. Its June 17, 2026 release says the comparison is based on Bundesnetzagentur data available through December 2025. Because this later comparison is published by Telekom, treat it as a company-attributed comparison rather than a regulator release. The Bundesnetzagentur’s October 2025 coverage figures and Telekom’s later comparison provide the source and dates.
These figures describe the share of Germany’s land area where a network reports 5G coverage. They do not establish that a network is faster, more reliable, or available indoors at a particular address. No single nationwide percentage can tell you how a signal behaves in your building or along your commute.

What do the latest nationwide coverage totals mean?
The Bundesnetzagentur monitoring page, with data status June 2026, says that at least one operator provides 4G across 97.8% of Germany’s area, some form of 5G covers 96.2%, and 4G or 5G mobile broadband reaches more than 98%. These are combined national totals: they do not mean that Telekom, Vodafone, and O2 each cover those same shares. The regulator’s mobile monitoring page explains the figures and offers a map for checking coverage.
Which network is best for your locations?
Use the national figures as a starting point, not a verdict. Your best choice is the network that works where and when you need it. Check the official map at the same locations for each network, paying attention to the technology shown:

- Home: Check the rooms and parts of the property where you make calls or use mobile data. The map estimates outdoor reception, so it cannot confirm indoor service.
- Work, school, and regular destinations: Compare coverage at the actual address, not just the surrounding town.
- Regular roads and rail routes: Check the routes you travel. Coverage can change between locations, especially while moving.
- 4G and 5G: Look at the technology layer you need. A map showing 4G does not mean that 5G is available there, and a 5G indication does not guarantee a particular speed.
The map’s outdoor estimates use 100-by-100-metre cells. Reception can vary within a cell, and a map estimate is not a guarantee of minimum signal or speed. Terrain, trees, building materials, your device, and whether you are indoors can affect what you actually receive. The Bundesnetzagentur describes these limits in its mobile monitoring FAQ and coverage map guidance.
How to check coverage before switching
- Open the Bundesnetzagentur mobile monitoring map. Search for your home, work or school, and regular travel routes.
- Compare all three networks at each location. Keep the map area and technology layer consistent so the comparison is like for like.
- Prioritize the places that matter most. A broad national lead may matter less than reception in the rooms and routes you rely on daily.
- Try another network locally if the decision matters. The regulator says consumers can use test SIM cards to check reception before changing provider.
- Check the tariff’s underlying network. Compare price and terms only after confirming which network the provider uses.
For indoor calling problems, Wi-Fi calling may help where the feature is available from your provider and supported by your phone. It is an alternative to relying on mobile reception inside the building, not proof that the mobile network itself has indoor coverage. The Bundesnetzagentur’s consumer FAQ covers local checks, test SIMs, and Wi-Fi calling.

Check which network a mobile provider actually uses
A provider’s brand is not necessarily the name of the network carrying its service. The Bundesnetzagentur says mobile service providers use one of the networks operated by Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica, or 1&1. Before treating a tariff from another provider as equivalent to an operator’s own service, ask which underlying network it uses. Coverage and tariff terms can differ. See the regulator’s guidance on mobile service providers and networks.

The October 2025 operator-specific comparison is from the Bundesnetzagentur. The newer precise comparison in this article is from Telekom and uses regulator data through December 2025. Separately, the regulator’s monitoring page gives June 2026 nationwide totals across operators. This helps us to better assess the actual situation.” Read the agency’s release.
