VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1 is a desktop hypervisor for running virtual machines on compatible 64-bit x86 Windows and Linux computers. Broadcom’s free-use terms cover Workstation Pro 17.5.2 and later, including 17.6.1, but downloading requires a Broadcom Support Portal account and export-compliance approval. The exact 17.6.1 installer’s present availability and its specific release-note changes are not confirmed here.
What VMware Workstation Pro 17.6.1 does
Workstation Pro creates virtual machines (VMs) that run guest operating systems on a Windows or Linux host. Each VM is presented with virtual hardware, including a CPU, memory, disks, and I/O devices. Broadcom positions Pro for IT professionals and developers, with capabilities such as running multiple VMs, virtual networking, clones, and connectivity to vSphere. These are Workstation product capabilities, not features established as new in version 17.6.1.
VMware Workstation Pro is for 64-bit x86/AMD64 hosts; it is not a Mac-hosted product. For Apple computers, Broadcom’s FAQ distinguishes the Mac product, VMware Fusion. See Broadcom’s Workstation and Fusion overview for product context.
What changed in version 17.6.1?
The available official release-note page could not be verified, so a specific fix list, security change, or new feature for 17.6.1 cannot be stated reliably. Search results associate the release with build 24319023, but that alone does not establish what the build changed. Treat general Workstation features as product capabilities rather than 17.6.1-specific additions.

Is Workstation Pro 17.6.1 free?
Yes, under Broadcom’s announced free-use terms. In its November 11, 2024 announcement, Broadcom said Workstation Pro 17.5.2 and later versions are available free for personal, commercial, and educational use. Version 17.6.1 falls within that version range. Broadcom’s Knowledge Base states: “No license key is required for the free version.” This refers to VMware Workstation Pro’s use terms; it does not grant licenses for guest operating systems installed in VMs. Read Broadcom’s download and licensing article.
How to download it from Broadcom
Free-use eligibility does not guarantee that the older 17.6.1 installer is still listed in the portal. Broadcom’s current download instructions require an account and export-compliance screening for a basic user. Approval may take several weeks, depending on the queue. A Site ID is not required for a basic user.
- Create or sign in to an account at the Broadcom Support Portal.
- Complete the profile and export-compliance screening requested by Broadcom, then wait for approval before expecting access to free downloads.
- In the portal, look for the VMware Workstation Pro download section and check whether version 17.6.1 is listed. If it is not available, the free-use policy alone does not provide the installer; consult Broadcom’s current download instructions for the supported releases that are available.
Broadcom’s portal guidance is in Download and license VMware Desktop Hypervisor (Fusion Pro and Workstation Pro). Its current release naming may refer to 25H2 or 26H1, so confirm the version shown in the portal rather than assuming an older installer remains downloadable.
Host compatibility and system requirements
Workstation requires a compatible 64-bit x86/AMD64 processor with Intel VT-x or AMD-V support. Broadcom’s general FAQ lists 2 GB RAM as the minimum and 4 GB or more as recommended; those figures are general product requirements, not a practical allocation guide for running several modern guest systems. Allow additional memory and storage according to the guest OS and workload.
Broadcom lists Windows and Linux as host families and states that Workstation 17 requires a 64-bit host. Linux support depends on the precise distribution and kernel, not just the word “Linux.” For example, Broadcom’s 17.6-line compatibility matrix lists Ubuntu 24.04 through kernel 6.8.0-40-generic and Ubuntu 22.04.6 through kernel 6.5. Check your exact release and kernel against the Broadcom Workstation Pro 17.x host OS support matrix before installing or upgrading.
These are host requirements: the computer running Workstation. Guest operating systems have their own hardware and licensing requirements, which are separate.

Virtual disks, networking, and common uses
Workstation stores virtual disk files on the host filesystem. Broadcom says virtual SCSI, IDE, or SATA disks can be up to 8 TB. Because the disk is a file, VM storage can be backed up, copied, or moved with the appropriate VM files; an external SSD is one optional way to store or transfer those files, not a Workstation requirement. Consult Broadcom’s Workstation product FAQ for storage details.
Workstation’s network modes serve different purposes:
Recommended Free Tools
Best Value
- Bridged: the VM connects to the network as a separate device and can obtain its own network address.
- NAT: the VM shares the host’s network address for external connectivity.
- Host-only: the VM uses an isolated network with the host.
- No network: the VM has no network connection.
The FAQ also describes vctl for OCI containers and local Kubernetes clusters. These are broader Workstation capabilities; they are not verified as changes introduced in 17.6.1.
How to decide whether 17.6.1 is the right version
Choose based on the environment you need to run, not on an unverified changelog. If you need to reproduce or preserve a specific 17.6.1 setup, first confirm that the installer is available and that your host is supported. If you are installing now for general use, compare the portal’s available release with your exact Windows or Linux host and kernel.
Quick Recap
- Check exact host OS and kernel support in Broadcom’s matrix.
- Confirm your guest OS and workload can be accommodated by the host’s CPU, memory, and storage.
- Decide whether you need multiple simultaneous VMs, cloning, virtual networking, or vSphere connectivity.
- Account for portal registration and export-compliance approval before planning an installation.
- Keep any guest OS license obligations separate from VMware’s free-use terms.
