The best VMware alternative depends on what each workload needs and how your team wants to operate it. Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV, Microsoft Hyper-V and Azure-integrated infrastructure, OpenShift Virtualization, public cloud, and application modernization are distinct paths—not interchangeable hypervisors. For some organizations, keeping VMware under a different licensing arrangement may be the least disruptive option.

Choose a platform strategy before choosing a hypervisor

A replacement decision is broader than moving virtual machines from one hypervisor to another. Some workloads may move with limited change; others may be better suited to a hardware refresh, a different storage architecture, managed cloud infrastructure, or application redesign. The right comparison is therefore workload by workload, with operations, support, and transition costs included.

Start by grouping applications according to their dependencies and constraints. Identify which require specific hardware, storage behavior, network configurations, availability patterns, or integrations. Then distinguish workloads that can be re-virtualized from those where a cloud destination or modernization effort makes more sense. A platform that fits one group may be a poor fit for another.

VMware alternatives and when to evaluate them

Path Why evaluate it Questions to resolve
Proxmox VE Proxmox describes VE as a bare-metal platform using KVM/QEMU for virtual machines and LXC for containers. Its listed capabilities include clustering, high availability, migration, and multiple storage options. The vendor states that the software has no license cost and offers commercial subscription support. These are vendor feature and support claims, not an independent comparison. Can the team operate and support the platform at the required service level? Validate guest support, storage behavior, backup and restore, availability, integrations, and the migration process against representative workloads.
Nutanix AHV / Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure An integrated hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) option. A 2025 NAND Research report hosted by Nutanix identifies Nutanix Move as a migration tool. Confirm compatible hardware, storage architecture, migration scope, commercial terms, and implementation and support responsibilities. Treat the report’s relative assessments and recommendation as attributed analysis, not neutral proof of superiority.
Microsoft Hyper-V / Azure-integrated infrastructure Worth evaluating when the organization’s operating model and workload dependencies align with Microsoft technologies. The 2025 NAND Research report hosted by Nutanix includes these options in its discussion. Check licensing, Azure operating costs where applicable, hardware support, management tools, feature requirements, and workload compatibility. Do not assume ecosystem alignment alone establishes lower cost or feature parity.
Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Manages virtual machines alongside containers within Kubernetes, making it a potential fit when virtualization is part of a broader modernization strategy. The option is discussed in the 2025 NAND Research report hosted by Nutanix. Determine whether Kubernetes is genuinely part of the target operating model. Validate staff skills, migration tooling, required VM features, and the scope of vendor support.
Public cloud or application modernization Selected workloads may move to managed infrastructure or cloud-native services instead of another on-premises hypervisor. Microsoft lists Azure-native infrastructure, Azure Red Hat OpenShift, and Azure App Services among possible destinations for affected Azure VMware Solution customers. Model application changes, data and network dependencies, security and compliance requirements, cost controls, operational ownership, and exit options. This route may involve more than a VM migration.
Continue Azure VMware Solution (AVS) For customers keeping VMware in Azure, Microsoft describes a path involving portable VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) licensing on eligible AVS SKUs. Microsoft states that “AVS is not ending, only the SKU that includes the license is changing.” Confirm whether affected license-included reservations can transition before the applicable retirement date. Compare the cost and requirements of a VCF bring-your-own-license (BYOL) SKU with those of migrating to another Azure destination.

Platform details and availability can change. Confirm current capabilities, supported configurations, and terms with the relevant vendor before selecting a path. The Nutanix-hosted NAND Research report is useful for identifying options, but its recommendation should not be treated as an independent platform ranking.

Compare the operating model, not just feature lists

A hypervisor’s feature checklist does not tell you whether your organization can run it well. Compare the day-to-day operating requirements against the team, tooling, and service levels you actually have.

  • Operations and skills: Identify who will handle provisioning, patching, monitoring, capacity, incident response, and recovery. Include the training or hiring needed for a different toolchain or operating model.
  • Hardware and storage: Verify supported hardware and the storage architecture required by each workload. Include any refresh, redesign, or data movement work in the plan.
  • Availability and recovery: Define the required recovery behavior and test it rather than inferring it from a product feature name. Check backup restoration, failover, and maintenance procedures.
  • Support boundaries: Establish which vendor, partner, or internal team supports each layer, including the guest operating system, hypervisor, storage, network, backup, and migration tooling.
  • Integration and controls: Check monitoring, automation, identity and access controls, security requirements, and existing operational integrations.
  • Migration and coexistence: Account for application dependencies, cutover windows, rollback, and the possibility that two platforms must run at once during transition.

Build a total-cost comparison that includes the transition

A software license with no charge is not the same as a lower total cost of ownership. Proxmox states that its software has no license cost while listing commercial subscription support; that fact alone does not establish what a business deployment will cost.

Compare costs over the same time horizon and workload scope. Include hardware, migration labor, training, storage and network changes, backup, support, ongoing staffing, and the overlap period when the old and new environments coexist. For cloud destinations, also model recurring infrastructure and operating costs. No apples-to-apples prices or total-cost figures are established here, so a business should obtain current quotes and build its own workload-specific model.

Use a proof of concept to test the workload and the service

Before committing to a platform, select representative applications rather than testing only an easy-to-move virtual machine. Agree on measurable acceptance criteria with the teams responsible for the applications and their infrastructure.

  • Performance under representative load and expected peak conditions.
  • Recovery behavior, including a successful backup restoration and the required recovery sequence.
  • Maintenance behavior and whether planned work fits application maintenance windows.
  • Monitoring, alerting, automation, access controls, and operational handoffs.
  • Migration steps, data integrity checks, cutover time, rollback conditions, and responsibility for each step.
  • Support response and escalation boundaries for the tested configuration.

A proof of concept can show whether a specific workload and operating process meet your requirements; it is not a general benchmark of one platform against another. Record the configuration, test conditions, results, and unresolved dependencies so the decision can be reviewed later.

Plan a phased move with a rollback for each application

  1. Inventory applications and dependencies. Record owners, guest systems, storage and network needs, integrations, availability requirements, backup arrangements, and any hardware constraints.
  2. Sort workloads by destination. Separate candidates for re-virtualization from those that need redesign, a hardware or storage change, or a managed-cloud destination. Keep workloads on VMware where that remains the best-supported choice.
  3. Validate the target. Check current vendor requirements and support terms, then run representative proof-of-concept tests with agreed acceptance criteria.
  4. Estimate full transition cost. Include labor, training, support, infrastructure changes, cloud operating costs where applicable, and temporary coexistence.
  5. Move in controlled waves. Set application-specific cutover windows, data checks, owners, communications, and rollback triggers. Avoid treating a successful pilot as proof that every workload will behave the same way.
  6. Retire old capacity only after verification. Confirm application operation, recovery readiness, monitoring, and support ownership before decommissioning the source environment.

Azure VMware Solution customers: check the license-included retirement dates

Microsoft Learn’s Azure VMware Solution licensing update, last updated 1 September 2026, states that license-included PayGo SKUs retire on 31 October 2026. It states that license-included services retire on 30 August 2027; affected customers need to move to a VCF BYOL SKU or fully migrate to a new Azure destination to avoid service disruption on 31 August 2027. These dates apply to the affected license-included AVS offerings, not to every VMware deployment or to AVS as a whole.

Microsoft lists Nutanix Cloud Clusters on Azure as an alternative private-cloud offering and also names Azure-native infrastructure, Azure Red Hat OpenShift, and Azure App Services as possible destinations. Those are options to assess, not proof that each is a drop-in replacement for a particular AVS workload. Confirm eligibility, current service terms, and transition requirements directly with Microsoft before acting, especially as the PayGo retirement date approaches.
