Who owns Vizio, and does Sony own it?
Walmart completed its acquisition of Vizio on December 3, 2024. Vizio’s current official privacy-policy wording says, “VIZIO is owned by Walmart.” Sony is not the owner.

Walmart’s announcement said the companies would continue operating separately for the foreseeable future. That means the acquisition changed Vizio’s corporate ownership, but it did not mean that Vizio TVs became Sony products or that Vizio disappeared as a consumer-facing brand. Vizio continues to present its own televisions, connected-TV platform, and entertainment services.
The financial terms help explain the scale of the transaction, but they do not change the answer to the ownership question: Walmart said the deal was valued at approximately $2.3 billion and offered $11.50 per share. These are figures from Walmart’s 2024 acquisition announcement, not current prices for Vizio products or shares.
Are Vizio and Sony TVs made by the same company?
No: they are separate brands under separate corporate ownership. However, brand ownership alone does not identify the factory that made a particular television. Vizio: SmartCast and WatchFree+
Vizio describes SmartCast as part of its TV experience and highlights built-in streaming apps. Its WatchFree+ service is promoted as offering more than 300 free channels. Channel counts and service details can change, and access may depend on the device, location, and current service terms, so check Vizio’s current service information for availability where you live.
Walmart and Vizio cited more than 19 million active SmartCast accounts in their December 2024 acquisition announcement. That is a dated account figure, not a count of current TV owners or a measurement of how many people use the platform today. It does show that Vizio’s connected-TV and advertising business is part of the brand’s identity in addition to hardware sales.
Sony: Google TV on applicable BRAVIA models
Sony’s U.S. catalog identifies Google TV on applicable BRAVIA models. Check the product page for the exact TV to confirm its platform and supported applications; catalog-level wording should not be read as a promise that every model in every market has identical software or app availability.
In practical terms, the platforms are a meaningful part of the ownership experience because they affect the menus and services you use to find and watch content. If a particular streaming app, free-channel service, or voice feature matters to you, confirm its availability on the exact model in your country before buying. A platform name by itself cannot settle that question.
Which is better, Vizio or Sony?
Neither brand is automatically better in every case. Compare picture features by model
Sony’s current U.S. catalog spans RGB LED, OLED, Mini LED, and LED televisions. That breadth gives shoppers several display categories to compare, but the category name alone does not establish how a particular set performs. Vizio’s exact display technologies and specifications likewise need to be checked model by model. Look at the manufacturer’s specifications for display type, resolution, HDR format support, refresh rate, and connections rather than assuming that all TVs from one brand share the same capabilities.
Picture processing, brightness, contrast, and motion handling are model-specific. The available brand-level information does not provide an apples-to-apples performance test or a universal result for Vizio versus Sony. If image quality is your priority, compare published specifications and credible independent reviews for the particular models, with attention to the same screen size and viewing conditions.
Check gaming support instead of relying on the logo

For a small room or a TV used mainly for news and casual viewing, built-in sound may be sufficient for some viewers; a larger room, films, or clearer dialogue may lead you to consider separate audio equipment. That is a needs-based decision, not evidence that one brand’s audio is categorically superior.
Factor in price, availability, and support
Vizio is described as value-focused, while Sony offers a broader range of feature and display tiers. Neither description supplies a current price comparison: prices vary by model, size, retailer, promotion, and location. Compare the final price of equivalent screen sizes and features, and include any separate audio equipment you expect to need.
Retail distribution, warranty coverage, software support, and product availability can also change.
