Workspaces address which tabs belong together; Tab Stacks and Tab Tiling help organize or display tabs within that context.
What Workspaces do in Vivaldi 6.0
A Workspace is a separate set of tabs for a particular activity or category. You might keep work tabs in one Workspace and news, social media, or shopping tabs in others, then switch between those sets as your task changes. Vivaldi compared the idea to rooms in a home, each with a different purpose. Vivaldi’s April 18, 2023 release announcement introduced Workspaces as a way to separate related tabs rather than keep every open page in one tab bar.
Workspaces, Tab Stacks, and Tab Tiling
| Feature | What it organizes or changes |
|---|---|
| Workspaces | Separate sets of tabs by task or category. |
| Tab Stacks | Group related tabs together within a tab bar; stacks can be used inside a Workspace. |
| Tab Tiling | Show multiple tabs side by side or in a grid within a Workspace. |
These features work at different levels. A Workspace separates broader contexts, a Tab Stack groups pages within that context, and Tab Tiling changes how multiple tabs are displayed. For example, you could keep project-related pages in one Workspace, group a subset in a Tab Stack, and tile selected tabs to view them together.
How to create and switch Workspaces
- In the Tab Bar, open the Workspaces button.
- Choose New Workspace, enter a name, and select an icon.
- Create the Workspace. To change contexts later, use the Workspaces menu or a keyboard shortcut.
The exact setup sequence is in Vivaldi’s Workspaces help tip. The 6.0 release article also explained that tabs could be moved between Workspaces through a tab’s context menu or by dragging them in the Windows Panel.

How Custom Icons work with Themes
Vivaldi 6.0 added custom toolbar icons to the browser’s Theme customization. In the Theme Editor, users could replace icons for navigation buttons, panels, and Command Chains, then export a Theme with its icon set for sharing in the Vivaldi Themes Gallery. Vivaldi’s Themes help tip describes finding themes with Custom Icons and editing them through Settings > Themes > Editor > Icons.
Custom Icons change the browser interface, not the contents or organization of a Workspace. They are optional: Workspaces can be used without creating Command Chains or changing a Theme.

Optional: give Workspaces distinct icons or Themes
For a more customized setup, Vivaldi’s Workspaces tutorial describes creating Command Chains that switch Workspaces and placing their buttons on a toolbar. You can assign different custom icons to those buttons. A more advanced chain can combine “Switch to Workspace” and “Switch to Theme” commands, associating a visual Theme with a Workspace change. This is a customization workflow, not a prerequisite for tab organization.

Vivaldi’s April 2023 announcement said Workspaces were enabled by default in version 6.0, could be disabled under Settings > Tabs > Tab features, and had pinned tabs specific to each Workspace. It also said deleting a Workspace closed its tabs. Those are release-era details; the announcement does not establish that these settings and behaviors remain unchanged in later versions.
