Short answer: A perpetual Visual Studio license lets you keep using the licensed IDE version; it does not, by itself, include a subscription’s other benefits or future-version updates. Microsoft lists Visual Studio Professional 2026 as a one-time standalone IDE purchase with perpetual licensing. Some Visual Studio subscriptions also grant perpetual rights to the IDE version included, but eligibility depends on the subscription and purchase channel.
What does a Visual Studio perpetual license include?
Microsoft’s pricing page describes the standalone IDE as a one-time purchase with “perpetual licensing without the other benefits included in subscriptions.” In practical terms, the purchase covers the IDE under its applicable license terms; it is not a subscription bundle. Microsoft currently lists Visual Studio Professional 2026 as a standalone one-time purchase. Check the live Visual Studio pricing page and the product-specific terms when buying, since purchase terms and availability can change.
“Perpetual” means you may continue using the licensed version under the applicable terms. It does not mean you receive every future Visual Studio release, ongoing subscription services, or other subscriber benefits.
How does a standalone license differ from a subscription?
| What you are comparing | Standalone IDE purchase | Visual Studio subscription |
|---|---|---|
| What is included | The IDE license; Microsoft says the standalone option does not include subscription benefits. | The IDE plus a plan-dependent bundle of benefits. Not every plan includes every benefit. |
| After the subscription ends | Not applicable to the one-time standalone purchase; use remains subject to the product license terms. | Eligible subscribers can keep using the current IDE version under perpetual rights, but eligibility varies. Benefits have separate rules. |
| Future IDE versions | Future-version rights are not established by the standalone listing; check the product terms at purchase. | Keeping an eligible current version after expiry does not include updates to future versions. |
| Other services and benefits | Not included as subscription benefits. | May include downloads, Azure credits, Azure DevOps, training, support, or other resources, depending on plan and availability. |
Microsoft distinguishes standard subscriptions, which provide a broader plan-dependent set of benefits, from monthly subscriptions intended for month-to-month access. Compare the exact options on the pricing page and review Microsoft’s subscription overview before choosing.

Can you keep using Visual Studio after a subscription expires?
Microsoft says most subscriptions provide perpetual licenses for the Visual Studio IDE, but “most” is not “all.” If your subscription qualifies, you can continue using the current IDE version after expiry. You do not receive updates to future versions through that expired subscription. Verify your exact subscription and purchase channel in Microsoft’s subscription-expiration guidance and licensing terms.
What expires when a subscription ends?
IDE use, downloads, product keys, and other benefits do not all follow the same timeline. Microsoft’s expiration guidance says that, after expiry, you cannot activate new benefits and the subscription portal’s Product Keys page is no longer available. Keys you claimed earlier continue to function normally, and products you downloaded remain valid. Previously activated benefits with a time limit may remain usable only for the rest of their individual term.

What benefits might a subscription add?
Depending on subscription type, Microsoft lists benefits such as software downloads, Azure credits, discounted Azure dev/test pricing, Azure DevOps, Microsoft 365 developer resources, training, and support incidents. These are examples, not a promise that every plan includes each item. Benefit availability and terms can change, so check Microsoft’s subscription overview and the live plan comparison for the specific subscription you are considering.

Does a Visual Studio subscription license cover production use?
Microsoft describes Visual Studio subscriptions as per-user licenses for covered development activities. Each team member who interacts with subscription-provided software for those activities needs their own license. A licensed user may install the software on any number of devices for design, development, testing, evaluation, and demonstration, subject to stated exceptions. Subscription software is generally not licensed for production environments; Microsoft documents specific exceptions in its licensing materials. Confirm the applicable agreement and terms before relying on an exception. See Microsoft’s subscription administration guidance.

Microsoft’s July 2023 Visual Studio 2022 licensing white paper describes perpetual rights for certain products and explains that those rights do not extend subscription services, future updates, or continued access to subscriber downloads and product keys. It also identifies subscription categories that generally do not provide perpetual use rights. This document is specific to its Visual Studio 2022 context; do not assume it settles the terms for a current Visual Studio 2026 purchase or a different subscription channel.
