If Visual Studio says your license has gone stale, does not recognize your subscription, or reports that it expired, start by checking the account assigned to the subscription. Then refresh the license token, confirm the subscription is active, and investigate tenant or identity issues. Visual Studio IDE subscription access is generally verified by signing in—not by searching for a generic activation key.
1. Confirm you’re signed in with the assigned account
The first thing to check is the exact sign-in identity attached to your subscription. Microsoft identifies using a different account from the assigned one as the most common sign-in problem. Compare the email shown in your subscriber assignment or welcome email with the account in Visual Studio. See Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
- If you have both personal and work or school identities, sign in with the one that was assigned the subscription. The same email address can be associated with distinct identity types.
- If the subscriptions portal shows another subscription under the same address, open the portal’s subscription list and select the one you intend to use. Microsoft’s subscription usage guidance explains how to view subscription details.
- If you can open the portal but cannot see an employer-provided subscription, ask your subscription administrator to verify that it is still assigned to you and has not expired or been reassigned. It may also have been assigned to a different email address.
2. Refresh a stale license token
The warning “Your license has gone stale and must be updated” does not by itself prove that your subscription expired. Visual Studio may need to refresh its license token after an extended period without use or an internet connection, or after you sign out. Re-enter the credentials for the account associated with the subscription. Microsoft says Visual Studio can warn before the token becomes stale; Account Settings can show how many days remain. Follow the Visual Studio license update instructions.
- In Visual Studio, open File > Account Settings and check the account and license information.
- If prompted to update the license, sign in again with the assigned subscription account.
- If the issue persists and your organization uses multiple Microsoft Entra tenants, open File > Account Settings > … > Apply filter and filter out tenants that are not needed for this sign-in.
Conditional Access or multifactor authentication policies can also affect account state or license recognition. If reauthentication and tenant filtering do not help, ask your organization’s administrator whether its sign-in policies or tenant configuration are involved.

3. Check whether the subscription actually expired
Use File > Account Settings to inspect the license details before treating an activation message as proof that your rights ended. A stale token is a refresh problem; an expired subscription is an entitlement issue. If the trial or subscription has expired and you no longer have access rights, Microsoft’s documented options are to renew it, sign in with another account that has a subscription, or enter a product key when one applies. See Microsoft’s license and trial guidance.
For Professional or Enterprise evaluations, Microsoft says signing in can extend the evaluation period before sign-in from 30 days to 90 days after a one-time extension. These are trial-specific terms, not a general fix for an expired paid subscription.

What you can continue using after expiration depends on the subscription’s licensing terms. Most subscriptions provide perpetual rights to the IDE, but eligibility varies. Eligible subscribers can keep using their current IDE version after expiration; that right does not include updates to future versions. Other subscription benefits may end or remain available only for their remaining term. Check the applicable terms in Microsoft’s subscription benefits documentation.
4. Don’t use an IDE product key as the default fix
For subscription access to the Visual Studio IDE, Microsoft verifies entitlement through sign-in. Its documentation says product keys for the IDE are not available through the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal. Visual Studio 2026 also does not require a product key: sign in with the account assigned the subscription. Read Microsoft’s IDE product-key guidance.

Keys may still be relevant to other eligible software, earlier Visual Studio versions, or some organization-managed deployment scenarios. Microsoft lists subscription software such as Windows, Windows Server, Office client applications, and Expression Studio as products that may require keys. Those activations are separate from unlocking the Visual Studio IDE; consult its product-key guidance for the applicable product and scenario.
5. Investigate tenant, alias, or identity changes
A subscription can be valid yet inaccessible if the sign-in identity no longer matches the one assigned to it. Microsoft documents issues involving deleted identities and email aliases that differ from the assigned sign-in identity. Before renaming an account or creating a personal Microsoft account with a work address, ask your organization’s administrator to confirm the assigned identity and any changes to your account. See Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Microsoft’s cited guidance says the subscriptions portals and Visual Studio IDE do not support GCC High or private-cloud tenants. If your organization uses one of these environments, check with its administrator about supported access rather than repeatedly changing credentials. Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting page, last updated September 12, 2025, also notes that a legacy authentication path used by some government-cloud identities ended in April 2025; consult the current page for the applicable sign-in route.

Use Visual Studio Subscriptions support for account access, subscription assignment, sales, or billing questions. For an IDE technical problem that is not about entitlement or account access, use Visual Studio technical support. Some subscriptions include a limited number of technical support incidents; availability depends on the benefits for your subscription.
