Most individual developers, students, and open-source contributors should start with Visual Studio Community. It is free and supports eligible users building free or paid apps. Professional is a paid option for individuals and small teams; consider it when your organization is not eligible for Community, you need a specific Professional feature or subscription benefit, or you need more control over Visual Studio 2026 updates.

Community vs. Professional at a glance

Question Community Professional
Price and format Free for eligible scenarios. Microsoft says individuals may use it to create free or paid apps. Paid: available as a standalone IDE or through monthly and annual subscription offers.
Typical fit Individuals, classroom learning, academic research, open-source contribution, and limited use in non-enterprise organizations. Individual developers and small teams that need a paid edition, particular features, subscription benefits, or LTSC options.
Organizational eligibility For other usage scenarios, non-enterprise organizations may use Community for up to five users. Enterprise organizations have narrower permitted uses. Check the relevant Professional license or subscription terms for your situation.
Visual Studio 2026 servicing Users must update to the latest release within 180 days to continue using the product. Professional editions are available through Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) options.

Microsoft describes Community as fully featured for eligible scenarios and lists broad development-platform and IDE support across Community and Professional. Do not assume Professional is necessary just because you are doing ordinary coding or need common language support. Compare the exact feature or benefit you need against Microsoft’s edition comparison.

Can you use Community at work or for commercial apps?

Microsoft’s pricing page says any individual can use Community to create their own free or paid apps. That means the fact that an app is commercial does not, by itself, rule out an individual user. Organizational use has additional limits, however, so distinguish an individual’s eligibility from a company’s.

Non-enterprise organizations

For usage scenarios other than classroom learning, academic research, and open-source contribution, Microsoft allows up to five users in a non-enterprise organization to use Community. The five-user allowance is an organizational limit, not a general entitlement for any company of any size.

Enterprise organizations

Microsoft defines an enterprise organization as one with more than 250 PCs or more than US$1 million in annual revenue. In such organizations, Community use is limited to classroom learning, academic research, and contributing to open-source projects. If your company crosses either threshold, do not treat Community as a general-purpose work license.

These are Microsoft’s summary descriptions; the applicable license terms control edge cases. Check the current Visual Studio license terms before relying on Community for a particular employer, contractor arrangement, or organization.

What does Professional add?

Professional is Microsoft’s paid offering positioned for individual developers and small teams. One highlighted IDE feature is CodeLens, which can show code references, changes, authorship, and test status in context. Microsoft also lists Azure DevOps and subscription benefits, depending on the offer you choose.

Community and Professional share a broad set of development platforms and IDE capabilities. Make the upgrade decision around a concrete need rather than the assumption that paid means required for professional coding:

  • A required feature: Check the comparison page for the exact capability and edition availability.
  • A subscription benefit: Compare the included benefits of the specific subscription, not just the IDE name.
  • Servicing control: If your team needs to stay on a supported release channel instead of adopting the latest annual release promptly, examine Professional’s LTSC options.
  • License eligibility: If your organization’s Community use is outside the permitted scenarios, choose an appropriately licensed paid option.

How much does Professional cost?

Microsoft’s U.S. pricing page, reviewed October 7, 2026, listed these Professional options. Prices and availability can change; check the current pricing page for your region before buying.

Offer shown by Microsoft U.S. listed price (reviewed October 7, 2026) What to note
Professional standard subscription US$99.99 per user per month, paid annually Listed renewal rate after the first year: US$66.59 per user per month. Includes Azure DevOps Basic, Azure credit, development and test software, training, and support.
Professional monthly subscription US$45 per user per month Described by Microsoft as Professional plus Azure DevOps Basic. Benefits differ from the standard subscription.
IDE standalone US$499 A standalone IDE option rather than one of the subscription bundles.

The annual-subscription figure is a per-user monthly equivalent with annual payment, not a month-to-month commitment at that rate. Because the offers bundle different benefits, compare the terms and inclusions you will actually use before weighing their prices.

Is Professional a subscription or just an IDE?

It can be either. Microsoft’s pricing page separates a standalone Professional IDE purchase from subscriptions that bundle the IDE with services and other benefits. Microsoft Learn also lists purchase channels for Professional subscriptions and a license-only 2026 Professional offer. Confirm the precise offer, licensing terms, and included benefits with Microsoft’s Visual Studio subscription information and pricing page; the word “Professional” alone does not tell you which package you are buying.

Do Community and Professional handle updates differently?

Yes. Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 servicing guidance gives each annual release a two-year support period. The first year includes feature, platform, security, functionality, and quality updates; the second year provides security updates through the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC). Professional editions are available on LTSC channels. Community users must update to the latest release within 180 days to continue using the product.

This distinction matters most when a team needs to control when it adopts annual releases. Review Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2026 lifecycle and servicing guidance for the release and channel details that apply to your deployment.

Choose the edition that fits your situation

Choose Community if…

  • You are an individual developer, student, or open-source contributor in a supported scenario.
  • You are in a non-enterprise organization and your use falls within Microsoft’s limits, including the up-to-five-user allowance for other usage scenarios.
  • You do not need a Professional-specific feature, subscription bundle, or servicing option.

Consider Professional if…

  • Your organization cannot use Community for the work you need to do.
  • You have identified a Professional feature or subscription benefit that you need.
  • Your release-management requirements make Professional’s LTSC availability relevant.

Before purchasing, verify the current license and subscription terms for your organization, compare the exact offer’s benefits, and confirm current regional pricing. Team size alone is not enough to determine the right edition.
