Visual Studio Code’s Copilot Edits preview, announced on November 12, 2024, let developers ask for related changes across selected files, review proposed edits inline, and accept, reject, or refine them. It was a guided editing workflow: the later agent mode added more autonomy, including finding relevant files and running terminal commands. These are milestones in the product’s history, not a guarantee of what is available or included in every plan today.
What was Copilot Edits?
Microsoft introduced Copilot Edits as a preview combining conversational chat with code changes shown directly in the editor. Rather than ask for a suggestion in one file at a time, a developer could describe a change in natural language, have Copilot propose edits across a selected group of files, and inspect those changes in context.
Microsoft described the workflow as iterative: review the proposed changes, accept the parts that work, discard the rest, and make follow-up requests. The announcement said edits were limited to the selected Working Set, with an exception for proposing a new file. This describes the announced preview; the announcement is not evidence of every implementation detail or access condition.
Microsoft presented refactoring across files and developing early ideas as uses for the feature. Its announcement also included a product manager’s account of using Copilot Edits to develop an app without prior Swift experience. That is an individual anecdote, not a controlled evaluation or a promise that the feature can replace programming expertise.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How did AI editing across files work?
- Choose the context. Add the files you want Copilot to work with to the Working Set.
- Describe the task. Ask for the desired change conversationally, such as a refactor that touches several selected files.
- Inspect proposed edits. Review the changes inline rather than treating the response as an instruction to apply blindly.
- Accept, discard, or refine. Keep useful changes, reject others, and use follow-up requests to adjust the result. The preview could also propose a new file.
This is the interaction Microsoft described in its November 12, 2024 Copilot Edits announcement. Because that page could not be fully reviewed, claims here are limited to the available announcement description.
Copilot Edits versus agent mode
Agent mode, introduced as a preview for VS Code Insiders in February 2025, expanded the workflow beyond editing a user-selected set of files. VS Code said the agent could find relevant files, propose changes, run terminal commands and tests, monitor output, and respond to compile or lint errors. The distinction is primarily how much initiative the system takes and how broad the task is—not simply which option is newer.

| Aspect | Copilot Edits workflow | Agent mode, as described in 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A scoped change, especially when you want to choose the files and review edits. | Open-ended or multi-step work that may require discovery and follow-up actions. |
| Context | Works within the selected Working Set, according to the 2024 announcement. | Can search the workspace for relevant files. |
| Tools and iteration | Proposes code changes for review and follow-up. | Can invoke tools, run terminal commands and tests, inspect output, and iterate on reported errors. |
| Oversight | Developer reviews, accepts, or discards proposed edits. | The February preview made tool invocations visible, required approval for terminal actions, and described undo support. In April, VS Code said tool calls required approval except for read-only built-in tools. |
| Speed and requests | VS Code recommended edits mode for a well-defined task and quick turnaround. | May take longer and use more model requests; VS Code warned that multiple requests per prompt could quickly consume free Copilot quota. |
In the February 24, 2025 post, VS Code recommended edits mode for well-defined work and agent mode for open-ended, multi-step tasks. Isidor Nikolic wrote that agent mode “may send multiple requests per prompt,” making it slower than regular edits mode and potentially quick to use up free Copilot quota. The warning is specific to that dated post; it does not establish current quota rules.
By April 7, 2025, VS Code said agent mode was rolling out to all users, with MCP server and extension tools, and described a unified chat and edits experience. It also said the agent could search a workspace, change code, run terminal commands, and collect editor errors. This later rollout means “preview” in the 2024 Copilot Edits announcement should not be read as the current status of every related feature.

Other VS Code previews announced in February 2025
The February 12, 2025 release post covered three preview features. Only one was Copilot Edits-related; the others addressed different editing interactions.
- Next Edit Suggestions: Anticipated edits to existing code, rather than only completing the current line. The post described enabling
github.copilot.nextEditSuggestions.enabled. At that time, Business and Enterprise users also needed an administrator to opt into Editor Preview Features. These are details from the dated post, not verified current settings or requirements. - Agent mode for Copilot Edits: Added the more autonomous workflow described above, initially as a preview for Insiders.
- Vision: Another preview in the same release, but a distinct feature rather than a name for multi-file editing.
What is established—and what may have changed
The dated announcements establish how Microsoft described the 2024 Copilot Edits preview and the agent-mode developments reported in February and April 2025. They do not establish current 2026 availability, plan eligibility, pricing, quotas, or settings. Check current official VS Code and GitHub Copilot documentation for those details before relying on them.
