Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a configurable workbench for editing code and keeping project validation close at hand. Open a folder or multi-root workspace, add language and tool support, run repeatable commands as tasks, debug and test with the project’s own tools, then review changes in source control. VS Code supplies the editor surface; your runtime, compiler, shell, test framework and many language features come from the development environment and extensions.
What a VS Code workspace actually is
A workspace is the folder, or set of folders, opened in one VS Code window. It gives the editor a project context in which it can restore open files and apply project-level settings, tasks and launch configurations. A single-folder workspace is sufficient for most repositories. A multi-root workspace combines related folders when, for example, a service, shared library and infrastructure code must be edited together.
Workspace metadata can be stored in a .code-workspace file, while many single-folder settings live in .vscode. Treat these files as project configuration, not as a replacement for the project’s build system. The editor can invoke a command, but it does not automatically install the compiler, runtime or package manager that command requires.
Open the project deliberately
- Use File > Open Folder… for one repository, or File > Add Folder to Workspace… to build a multi-root workspace.
- Check the Explorer root and the active folder before running commands; relative paths are interpreted from a task’s configured working directory.
- Save a workspace file when the folder combination, settings or launch configurations should be reproducible for teammates.
Make the editor fit your stack
VS Code’s core editor provides syntax-aware editing, search, navigation, source control integration and configurable layouts. Language-aware completion, diagnostics, refactoring, debugging adapters and framework tooling are a combination of built-in support and extensions; support is not identical for every language. Choose extensions with the same care as dependencies
The Marketplace hosts thousands of extensions, but popularity alone is not a security or maintenance guarantee. Before installing, inspect the publisher identity, permissions and repository, read recent release notes, and check whether the extension is maintained for your VS Code version. Remove extensions you no longer need and keep project-specific sets separate when practical. The official extension guide covers installation, profiles and management.
Use profiles for different projects
A profile stores a set of settings, UI choices, keyboard shortcuts and extensions. Create separate profiles for, say, a Python data project and a TypeScript web project, then switch from the gear menu or Command Palette. Profiles reduce accidental cross-project configuration while leaving the underlying repository unchanged.
Automate repeatable commands with tasks
Tasks turn the commands you already use—builds, formatters, linters, generators and test scripts—into named actions in the workbench. They are an invocation layer, not a compiler or test framework. The command must work in the selected environment, with dependencies installed and the correct shell available.
Create a task from the project’s real command
- Open the Command Palette and choose Tasks: Configure Task, then select a detected task type or Create tasks.json file from template.
- Set
label,type(commonlyshellorprocess),command, arguments and, when needed,options.cwd. - Add a
problemMatcheronly when the command’s output format can be mapped reliably to file, line and message diagnostics. - Run it with Terminal > Run Task or bind it as a default build task.

}Keep the task’s command aligned with the project’s documented script. A task that silently uses a different compiler, working directory or environment variable can produce a misleading green result.
Tasks, debugger and tests are different tools

Validate changes in a tight loop
Debug interactively
Install or enable the debugger support for your language, set a breakpoint by clicking the gutter, and start a configuration from Run and Debug. A launch.json configuration records the program, arguments, working directory, environment and (for some languages) the debugger adapter. Step over, into or out of calls and inspect locals, watches and the call stack. If a breakpoint is hollow or never binds, verify that the selected runtime and source maps match the code being edited.
Run and inspect tests
Install the project’s test extension when discovery is not built in. Use the Testing view to run an individual test, a file or the whole suite, and open failure output at the reported source location. Keep slow integration or end-to-end suites as explicit tasks or profiles so a quick unit-test command remains predictable.
Review source-control changes
The Source Control view surfaces changed files, diffs, staging and commit actions for supported providers such as Git. Use it to create branches, stage intentionally, resolve merge conflicts and review the final diff before committing. VS Code is a client for the repository system; branch protection, hooks, remotes and server-side checks still belong to that system.

Local, remote, container or WSL?
Remote Development keeps the VS Code interface while tools and source run in another context. Microsoft’s Remote Development FAQ covers containers, SSH-connected machines and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). The right choice depends on where dependencies are installed, how consistent the environment must be, network reliability and setup overhead—not on an assumed universal speed advantage.

For lightweight edits, the official documentation also describes browser-based VS Code. Browser sessions are convenient when installation is unavailable, but local or remote desktop contexts generally provide broader terminal, extension and debugger access.
Review workspace trust before executing anything
An unfamiliar repository can contain workspace settings, tasks and launch configurations that execute programs. VS Code opens such folders in Restricted Mode until you trust them. In that mode, terminal, tasks, debugging, workspace settings, agents and extensions that have not opted into trust may be limited or disabled.
- Inspect
tasks.json,launch.json, workspace settings and scripts before enabling trust. - Check the repository source, ownership and expected commands; do not trust a folder merely because a task appears convenient.
- Use the trust prompt or Command Palette’s Workspaces: Manage Workspace Trust only after review.
- Keep unknown code in Restricted Mode while reading it. Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “When in doubt, leave a folder in Restricted Mode. You can always enable trust later.” See Workspace Trust.
A practical daily workflow
- Open the repository and confirm the intended workspace folders and profile.
- Install only the language, debugger and test extensions required by the project.
- Read the project’s setup instructions, select the correct interpreter or runtime, and verify dependencies in the integrated terminal.
- Run a task for formatting, linting or a fast build.
- Use the debugger to investigate behavior that static diagnostics cannot explain.
- Run focused tests, then the project’s broader test command before committing.
- Review the Source Control diff, resolve conflicts, and commit through your normal Git workflow.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Command not found” in a task
The executable is absent from PATH, the wrong shell is selected, or dependencies were not installed. Run the same command in the integrated terminal, select the project interpreter/runtime, and set an explicit task environment or absolute executable only when the project documents that requirement.

Diagnostics point to the wrong file or line
The problem matcher may not match the tool’s output, or generated files and source maps are stale. Disable the matcher temporarily, verify the raw terminal output, then configure the matcher and rebuild.
Tests are missing
Confirm the test extension is installed and enabled for the current profile, the test command works outside VS Code, and the workspace root is the one the runner expects. Monorepos may require a per-folder configuration.
Debugger will not attach
Check that the launch configuration uses the same runtime, port, working directory and source-map settings as the running process. A firewall, container port mapping or remote connection can also block attachment.
Remote session is unreliable
Verify SSH or container connectivity first, then inspect remote extension logs and dependency installation. Keep source and tools in the same environment where possible to avoid slow cross-filesystem operations.

Can one workspace contain several repositories?
Yes. A multi-root workspace can combine folders, but each folder may have different settings, tasks and dependency assumptions. Keep commands explicit about their working directory.
Does installing VS Code install my language runtime?
No. Install and maintain the runtime, compiler, package manager and test framework required by the project, then configure VS Code and its extensions to use them.
Is Restricted Mode a sandbox for malicious code?
It limits or disables several execution-related features; it is a safety boundary, not proof that every file is harmless. Review the repository before granting trust.
