The headline “Ta cap touts high capacitance, low profile” referred to a 2003 announcement of Vishay Sprague 592D solid tantalum chip capacitors. The family remains listed by Vishay as a low-profile, conformally coated series, but the launch-era 3300 μF example and the announcement’s “highest available” positioning should not be treated as current specifications or an independently verified market ranking.
What the 592D family is
Vishay identifies the 592D as a family of conformally coated solid tantalum chip capacitors intended for low-profile designs. Its current series page gives a height range of 1.0–2.5 mm and links to product information and a datasheet: Vishay 592D series. A series page does not, by itself, confirm that a particular part number is in stock at a seller.
EDN’s November 11, 2003 product-news report described the devices as options for compact electronics, citing wireless GPRS PCMCIA modem cards and cell phones as examples of products needing high capacitance in limited space. Those are examples from the announcement, not a statement about present-day market demand. EDN’s 2003 announcement characterized the parts as offering the highest available capacitance in their size; that was the manufacturer’s claim as reported at the time, not a verified current market-wide comparison.
What the 2003 announcement reported
EDN reported two package examples, both rated at 6.3 WVdc. The figures below describe the 2003 announcement, not every current 592D variant.

The announcement also reported standard capacitance tolerances of ±10% and ±20%, maximum ESR of 0.055 Ω, and a ripple-current figure of 1.80 A at 25 °C and 100 kHz. These are announcement-era specifications; confirm a candidate’s ratings in the applicable manufacturer datasheet before design-in or replacement. EDN, November 11, 2003
What the 2022 datasheet lists for 2200 μF X-case parts
Vishay’s datasheet, revised April 11, 2022, lists standard 2200 μF, 6.3 V X-case variants with maximum heights of 2.0, 2.1, or 2.2 mm. For these variants, the table gives 139 μA maximum leakage, 35% maximum dissipation factor, 0.055 Ω maximum ESR, and 1.78–1.79 A maximum ripple current. The ripple ratings are the values listed for those variants in that datasheet; use its stated test conditions and the exact part entry when comparing them. This standard-ratings table supports the listed X-case options. It does not establish that the 2003 3300 μF Y-case example remains a current standard rating. Nor should an old announcement value be assumed to apply to every current part in the series.
How to check a 592D part for a design
Capacitance and height alone are not enough to select or replace a capacitor. Compare the complete electrical and mechanical requirements against the exact ordering code and current datasheet entry.

These code meanings are tied to the datasheet’s stated pattern, so verify the current ordering code and ratings rather than inferring a complete part number from one field.
