The “omnifocal” glasses shown in a 2015 video were a proposed concept, not a finished automatic eyewear product. The idea was to use sensors to infer where the wearer was looking, then change a liquid-crystal lens’s optical power electronically. Deep Optics later brought liquid-crystal eyewear to market as 32°N adaptive-focus sunglasses, but that product uses a touch swipe to activate reading magnification; it does not automatically track focus or currently correct far vision.
What the 2015 “omnifocal” glasses were meant to do
In a July 2015 report, EE Times described a Deep Optics concept that would adjust its lenses as the wearer shifted attention between near and distant objects. Two optical sensors in the frame were supposed to monitor pupillary distance—the distance between the pupils. The system would treat changes in that measurement as a clue to viewing distance.
An onboard processor would estimate the intended focus and calculate the required optical compensation. It would then change the voltage applied to a liquid-crystal layer inside the lens. Changing the liquid crystal’s refractive index was intended to change the lens power, allowing the glasses to adjust focus electronically.
That sequence—sensing, calculation, and voltage-controlled refraction—was the proposed mechanism, not proof of a working consumer product. The video was an animation. EE Times cautioned that it did not establish that a real-world mock-up was ready. A contemporaneous eeNews Europe report also noted unanswered questions, including calibration, battery life, and operation in low light.

How the proposal compared with the later 32°N glasses
Deep Optics’ later 32°N product uses liquid-crystal lenses, but it is not the automatic eye-tracking system imagined in the 2015 concept. The wearer activates reading magnification with a swipe. According to the manufacturer, a phone app can personalize or update that magnification.
| Comparison | 2015 omnifocal concept | 32°N adaptive-focus sunglasses |
|---|---|---|
| Activation | Proposed automatic sensing of changes in pupillary distance, followed by processor-controlled adjustment. This was a concept description, not a demonstrated product. What independent testing found in 32°N samples
A 2025 report from the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory evaluated 32N samples. Under the report’s test setup, the samples provided adjustable added optical power from 0.5 to 2.5 diopters. The report also measured switching latency averaging 7 seconds, with a standard deviation of 3 seconds, and found that optical properties varied across the lens area.

These are findings from the tested samples and protocol, not a guarantee of the timing or optical performance every consumer will experience. They do, however, provide a more concrete picture than the 2015 animation: liquid-crystal adaptive eyewear has been physically evaluated, while the automatic, sensor-driven concept remains distinct from the touch-operated product documented by the manufacturer.
What “omnifocal” does—and does not—mean here
In the 2015 story, “omnifocal” referred to the ambition to adapt focus electronically as viewing distance changed. It should not be read as evidence that those glasses were available, automatically tracked a wearer’s eyes, or delivered perfect vision. The phrase “Perfect vision – all the time” appeared as a startup promotional claim in the 2015 coverage, not as an independently established clinical result.

The later 32°N product is a narrower, practical implementation: sunglasses with user-activated reading magnification. The manufacturer says the inactive glasses work as regular sunglasses, and that far-vision correction is not currently provided. CEO Yariv Haddad told eeNews Europe in 2015 that the concept would require personal fitting and prescriptions for far-vision correction and near addition to maximize close-distance correction. That was a statement about the proposed fitting approach, not evidence that the later 32°N product supplies prescription far-vision correction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the 2015 video still matters
The animation introduced an ambitious engineering idea: combine sensing and processor control with a lens whose optical power can be changed electrically. The later product demonstrates a different route to adaptive eyewear, in which the wearer deliberately switches reading magnification on demand. Keeping those two implementations separate makes it easier to judge the technology: the concept explains what sensor-driven omnifocals were supposed to do; the 32°N product and the Army’s sample tests show what a related liquid-crystal eyewear product can do, and what limitations were measured.
