There is no single route or guaranteed payout. You can earn through platform revenue, direct support from viewers, sales and affiliate recommendations, or brand partnerships. The right mix depends on what your audience values, which features are available to you, and how much ongoing work you can take on.
Four ways creators earn from videos

These methods have different entry rules and risks; there is no comparable average-earnings figure established here. Treat platform income as one possible component, not a forecast, and test offers that genuinely fit your viewers.
Platform revenue: ads and subscriptions
On YouTube, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) gives eligible creators access to monetization features and revenue sharing from ads. YouTube’s February 3, 2025 explainer describes a 55% revenue share for long-form video ads and 45% for Shorts. These are YouTube’s stated shares, not a universal take-home rate or a prediction of what an individual creator will earn. Check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility requirements for your account and location.
Current application prerequisites
YouTube’s eligibility help page lists policy compliance, a supported location, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an AdSense for YouTube account among the requirements. Feature access has additional criteria, and rules can change. Check the live eligibility page before planning around a threshold.
Announced changes effective February 1, 2027
YouTube announced that, from February 1, 2027, new applicants seeking ads and Premium revenue sharing will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. From that date, Shorts ads and subscription revenue sharing will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. These are announced future requirements, not the rules to apply before that effective date. YouTube says channels below the Shorts threshold will remain in YPP and keep earning on long-form content; Shorts revenue sharing resumes if they cross the threshold again. The announcement says fan-funding and shopping entry thresholds are unchanged. Confirm current terms with YouTube’s announcement and the live eligibility help page.

Direct support from viewers
YouTube’s fan-funding options include channel memberships, which charge recurring monthly payments for member perks; Super Chat and Super Stickers during eligible live streams and Premieres; and Super Thanks on eligible videos and Shorts. The stated minimum requirements include being in YPP, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available. Each feature has its own additional criteria, so check what appears in your YouTube Studio Earn area.
Support is a fit when you can explain what paying viewers receive—such as access, perks or interaction—and deliver it consistently. It is not a predictable consequence of reaching a particular view count. YouTube also says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools; legal treatment can depend on applicable law and your activity. Read the Commerce Products monetization policies before offering paid perks.

Sell your own products or recommend affiliate products
These are two distinct approaches: with your own product, you control the offer and earn from sales of your goods; with an affiliate recommendation, you may earn when a viewer makes a qualifying purchase under a merchant’s or platform’s terms. Neither guarantees sales or a particular commission.

Before promoting a product, make sure it suits the audience and that you can explain its relevance honestly. Merchant-side guidance covers matters such as product samples, promotional incentives, analytics and commission settings; those details do not establish that a particular creator is eligible for a program. Earn through brand partnerships
A company may pay for a placement or collaboration when your content and audience suit its campaign. YouTube’s 2026 announcement described Creator Partnerships tools for brand discovery and deal workflows and said the product was available in 20 countries. That is a platform-specific availability statement, not a promise of access or of paid work.

A focused media kit can help explain your subject, audience and past work; a tailored pitch can show why a brand belongs in a particular video. The sources here do not establish standard rates or expected deal income. Follow the disclosure rules and platform settings that apply to your location and campaign; requirements differ by jurisdiction.
How to choose a sensible mix
- Start with the payer: Is income coming from a platform or advertiser, a viewer, a customer, an affiliate program, or a brand?
- Check the gate: Confirm account, policy, regional and feature eligibility before investing effort in a monetization route.
- Match the dependency: Ads depend on eligible monetized viewing; fan support on viewers choosing to pay; commerce on purchases; partnerships on a suitable negotiated campaign.
- Count the work: Perks, products, customer service and campaign deliverables create obligations beyond publishing videos.
- Avoid relying on one switch: Platform terms and enforcement can change. Build compatible income streams gradually, without treating any one of them as guaranteed.
Protect monetization eligibility
YouTube says monetized content must meet its advertiser-friendly guidelines. Violations of those guidelines or relevant age and copyright rules can lead to limited or no ad earnings. YouTube may also withhold or adjust earnings for invalid traffic, fake engagement or Content ID claims; suspension or termination can remove access to monetization. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and avoid attempts to inflate views or engagement.

Copyright and advertiser suitability matter even when a video attracts an audience: a claim or policy restriction can affect earnings independently of view count. Keep rights and permissions clear, and check any claims or monetization notices in YouTube Studio.
