H.264 (AVC) remains a dependable choice when compatibility matters most. H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 are newer designs intended to deliver high-quality video more efficiently, but neither guarantees a particular file-size or bitrate saving. The right choice depends on the content, encoder settings, playback devices, and how the video will be distributed.
Codec versus container: why an MP4 may still not play
A codec defines how video is encoded and decoded. A container packages one or more media streams with information such as audio, subtitles, and timing. MP4 and WebM are container or media-packaging formats, not codec names: an MP4 can contain video encoded with different codecs, subject to the container’s format rules and support in the software that reads it.
That is why a file extension alone cannot confirm that a device can play a video. Playback also depends on the video codec, its profile and bit depth, the container and its specific bindings, the player and operating system, and whether the device can decode it in software or through hardware acceleration. A standardized bitstream is not automatically supported by every standards-compliant player.
What H.264, H.265, and AV1 mean
H.264 / AVC
H.264 is also known as AVC, or Advanced Video Coding. It is standardized as ITU-T H.264 and ISO/IEC 14496-10. The ITU’s August 2024 edition describes uses including video conferencing, storage media, television broadcasting, internet streaming, and communications. Its broad support across many playback environments makes it a practical choice when the audience’s devices and software are not known in advance. ITU-T H.264 recommendation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.265 / HEVC
H.265, also known as HEVC, is standardized as ITU-T H.265 and ISO/IEC 23008-2. The ITU lists version 11 as January 2026. It describes HEVC as responding to demand for higher compression across uses such as internet streaming, communications, videoconferencing, digital storage, and television broadcasting. Compatibility still depends on the device, software, profile, and available decoding support. ITU-T H.265 recommendation
AV1
AV1 stands for AOMedia Video 1. The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) publishes its bitstream and decoding-process specification as well as media-format binding specifications. AOMedia describes AV1 as an open codec intended for efficient, high-quality video, including high-resolution internet video and adaptive streaming. It was developed under AOMedia’s royalty-free patent policy; that description is not a legal opinion that every implementation or use is free of all third-party claims. How to compare the codecs fairly
Video compression is a trade-off, not a single universal score. Encoders can exploit similarities within a picture and between pictures over time, then represent the remaining information in a compressed form. H.265’s standard describes techniques such as intra-picture prediction and inter-picture prediction using motion vectors; the prediction residual is transformed and quantized. The standard specifies the bitstream syntax and decoding process, while the encoder implementation decides how to search for and optimize an encoding. ITU-T H.265 recommendation
A newer codec may reach a particular quality target using less data in a particular test, but results depend on the source, encoder and version, settings, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, quality target, and decoder. Make sure a comparison answers the question you actually care about:

- Equal bitrate: At the same data rate, which version looks better?
- Equal quality: How much data does each version need to reach a defined quality level?
Those tests are not interchangeable. A sound comparison should identify the clips, encoder and version, preset, settings, target resolution and frame rate, bit depth, quality measure, and playback conditions. There is no single bitrate-saving percentage that can be applied reliably to every H.264, H.265, and AV1 encode.
Practical differences at a glance
| Codec | Useful strength | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / AVC | Broad compatibility makes it a useful delivery option when reaching a wide or uncertain range of devices is important. | Newer designs may compress more efficiently in particular tests, but the difference depends on the content, encoder, and settings. |
| H.265 / HEVC | Designed for higher compression efficiency across streaming, communications, storage, broadcast, and other applications. | Playback support varies by device, software, profile, and hardware. Encoding and licensing circumstances may also matter to distributors. |
| AV1 | An open specification developed under AOMedia’s royalty-free patent policy, aimed at efficient video delivery including high-resolution internet video. | Encoding complexity, actual compression results, hardware acceleration, and decoder support vary. AOMedia’s policy description is not a guarantee about every third-party claim. |
Which codec should you use?
Choose for broad, uncertain playback
If you need a file to play across a varied set of devices, applications, or older playback environments, H.264 is often a sensible starting point because it is broadly supported. Confirm that the particular profile, container, and export settings suit your target players rather than relying on the codec label alone.

Consider H.265 or AV1 when you can verify support
If reducing delivery data is important, test H.265 or AV1 on your actual source material and target devices. Keep the newer codec only if the measured improvement is worthwhile and the receiving software can decode it reliably. For a publisher serving different devices, providing a compatible fallback can be preferable to requiring every viewer to use one newer format.
Account for encoding and decoding costs
Compare the time and computing resources needed to encode, the storage or bandwidth used, and the device’s ability to decode smoothly. Encoding can be more demanding for complex codecs, while current performance depends on the encoder implementation and hardware. Meta’s 2018 engineering account reported longer AV1 encoding times than then-current alternatives; that is a dated observation about its comparison, not a universal ranking of today’s encoders. Why codec compatibility varies
Support can change with browser and browser version, operating system, application, hardware generation, codec profile, bit depth, and container. For example, MDN’s web media guide documents AVC’s broad compatibility alongside platform-specific caveats, and its AV1 notes include Safari support conditions tied to device generations. Compatibility tables are snapshots, so check the current support for the exact deployment target. MDN: Web video codec guide
Meta’s 2024 discussion of real-time communications describes H.264 as having broad hardware and application support and says royalty-free status was one factor in its AV1 choice. That is an account of Meta’s decision in its context, not a universal recommendation for every workflow. Meta Engineering’s 2024 RTC article
Troubleshoot a video that will not play
- Identify the actual video codec and profile. Inspect the file’s media details rather than assuming the extension reveals its encoding. Record the profile and bit depth if available.
- Check the container and player. Confirm that the player supports both the codec and the way it is packaged. Try a current player version that supports the file’s format.
- Check the operating system and device. Support may differ by platform or hardware generation, even when two devices use the same codec name.
- Consider the decode path. Hardware decoding may not be available for a particular profile or device; software decoding can also behave differently depending on the player and system.
- For a file you distribute, test representative targets. If reliable reach matters more than minimizing data, offer a compatible fallback and verify playback on the devices your audience uses.
A codec name by itself does not establish that you need a new GPU, a different player, or a complete re-encode. First find the unsupported part of the specific playback chain.
Streaming pre-recorded video to YouTube
