A CRT is a display; VHS is a videotape format. They are not competing ways to play retro games. If you want the look of older games or need to use a CRT-dependent light gun such as the original NES Zapper, a compatible CRT is the relevant choice. For most other setups, a modern TV can work well—use Game Mode when available and judge the whole console-to-screen signal path.
VHS and CRT are different things
VHS stores recorded video on tape. A CRT (cathode-ray tube) is a type of display. You do not need a VHS tape to play games from an older console; the console sends its video signal to a display. A VCR and CRT may be used together to watch a VHS recording, but that is a video-playback setup, not a choice between two gaming display technologies. Encyclopaedia Britannica describes VHS as a videotape recording system.
When a CRT makes sense for retro games
You want the original display character
Some games were designed with CRT image behavior in mind. A videogame-preservation white paper discusses effects such as blur, color bleed, phosphor glow, afterimages and scanlines, which developers could use as part of a game’s visual presentation. A CRT can therefore be a good fit if you want that period-specific appearance and motion behavior. It is not automatically the best display for every game or player.
You play a CRT-dependent light-gun game
Some original light-gun games rely on CRT display behavior. The preservation white paper gives the NES Zapper and Duck Hunt as an example; this should not be generalized to every retro game or peripheral. If you want to play this way, confirm that the console, game, light gun and display are compatible. The cited Duck Hunt setup also requires a CRT and compatible regional equipment. When a modern TV is the practical choice
A modern TV can be a convenient display for retro gaming, but responsiveness depends on the specific set, its picture mode and the rest of the signal path. Libretro recommends manually selecting Game Mode for emulation setups and states that manual activation remains essential in that context. Check the TV’s settings rather than assuming Game Mode is on by default. Libretro’s TV configuration guide explains its recommendation.
There is no universal latency figure that applies to every modern television or console-to-screen arrangement. If a setup feels delayed, consider the display mode as well as any intervening conversion equipment; assess the actual chain rather than treating “modern TV” as one consistent category.

What to consider if you emulate
Emulators may provide latency-reduction controls, and some also offer CRT shaders or overlays to approximate parts of a CRT’s appearance. Libretro documents configurable latency options, including a next-frame response claim of “≤16ms” under the conditions described on its latency page. That is project documentation for its described setup, not a universal measurement or a direct CRT-versus-TV comparison. Results depend on the emulator, hardware and display setup.
A shader can imitate selected visual effects, but the cited documentation does not establish that it reproduces the behavior of a physical CRT. See Libretro’s latency documentation for the options and conditions it describes.

Check compatibility before choosing a display
For original hardware, the console’s video output and the display’s inputs need to work together. If your setup uses conversion equipment, account for it as part of the signal path. For special peripherals such as light guns, check the game’s specific requirements rather than assuming that a display compatible with ordinary video will also support the peripheral.
- For CRT appearance or a CRT-dependent light gun: verify the display’s condition, available inputs, console-region compatibility and the peripheral requirements.
- For a modern TV: confirm how the console connects, select Game Mode when available and assess responsiveness in your complete setup.
- For emulation: check the emulator’s latency options and decide whether optional CRT effects suit your preference.
If you meant watching VHS game recordings
That is a separate question: you need a VCR and a compatible display to play the tape. The available sources do not establish which type of display gives the best VHS picture, so they do not support a general recommendation between CRTs and modern TVs for VHS playback.
